ITTF president Petra Sorling aims to take table tennis to new markets and wider audiences
Sorling said her second term (2025-29) will focus on ensuring the ITTF Group achieves long-term financial stability after reporting a net deficit of US$14.4 million in 2025, compared with a profit of US$1.5 million the previous year.

“I think we have really built a very strong brand. The presentation of table tennis, not only at WTT (World Table Tennis, the commercial arm of the ITTF) events but at tournaments around the world, is at a much higher level than before because, through WTT, local organisers have improved.”

“We have delivered events all over the world, but we have invested a lot too. That is where financial sustainability comes in. We now have to move into the second phase and make sure we are stable in the long term,” Sorling, who is also the Chair of WTT Board, told Sportstar on the sidelines of UTT Season 7 here on Friday.

She added that the ITTF Group had moved beyond its start-up phase and must now establish itself as a financially sustainable organisation.

An interview back in May during the WTTC 2026.

ITTF’s Sörling: US efforts will yield return despite recent financial loss

Dainton, who will also relinquish his role as WTT chief executive and board director, ended his long-standing official involvement in table tennis on May 1, although he remains on hand in the transition process, a process that Sörling says will accelerate soon with a WTT board meeting on May 9.

“We are deeply grateful for the contribution of Steve Dainton. However, the company is no longer a startup, and we are turning into a new phase, and that is where we are looking at a leadership that is consolidating, as well as still being innovative.

Recruitment covers the role across both bodies, with Dainton and the existing stakeholders involved, with timelines and other related information to be revealed following the May 9 board meeting.

ITTF Executive Board Reviews Progress Across Key Areas
https://www.ittf.com/2026/08/28/ittf-executive-board-reviews-progress-across-key-areas/
The ITTF Executive Board met online on Tuesday 25th August 2026, chaired by President Petra Sörling.

An encouraging financial update opened proceedings, setting a steady, positive tone for a session that took stock of progress across the Federation.
World Table Tennis (WTT) Acting Leadership Team gave a comprehensive update, with a detailed progress report covering its full range of initiatives. Among the highlights was the continued success of the US Smash 2026, along with strong showings at WTT Champions Yokohama and the Europe Smash – Sweden 2026 that concluded earlier this month. The Board also heard how the ongoing business review is steadily driving WTT towards a new chapter, one focused on consolidating the foundations of the company through disciplined commercial management, stabilising revenue streams, and making targeted strategic adjustments that support sustainable, long-term growth.
