Canada’s Eugene Wang and Japan’s Megumi Abe were the well-deserved and surprise winners of the Men’s and Women’s singles event on Saturday 6th July. Eugene Wang was the number three seed for the tournament and was able to overcome China’s Yan Ce at the final hurdle (7-11 12-10, 11-5, 11-8, 11-9).

This was after the Canadian was able to cause an even greater surprise in the penultimate round against the number one seed Sweden’s Jens Lundqvist winning in four straight games (11-7, 11-5, 11-9, 11-5).

The champion of the Women’s singles event was an even bigger surprise Japan’s Megumi Abe was unseeded in the tournament but was by far the most worthy tournament. On the concluding day of play she was able to overcome the top two seeds to clinch gold, in the semi-final stages she was able to defeat Hungary’s Georgina Pota who was the second seed in five sets (11-9, 11-5, 11-8, 5-11, 11-5).

The talented Japanese player was able to then go on to defeat the top seed Romania’s Elizabeta Samara in another five set match (11-6, 11-5, 11-6, 5-11, 11-7) to clinch the title of champion.

So the gamble paid off for both Eugene and Megumi in Las Vegas as they both left with $4000 for their efforts.
