Can I make the bat smaller and lighter by shaving or cutting it ? Would it be damaged ? will the quality be affected ?????

A smaller head will be lighter. But it will have less feeling and the blade will be slower. But changing the head size is possible if you trust you can cut evenly and have the tools.

Also, if it is a composite blade, certain composite materials are very hard to cut. So if you don't have the right tools for cutting, you could damage your blade.

I will see if I can find bobpuls thread on making blades so you can see how he cuts the blade.

how about sanding or cutting around the bat to make it smaller , not the handle. If I buy a penhold bat and sand it a bit smaller, will the bat be damaged ???????

Sanding should work for wood. Probably won't work well for a composite blade. The hard part, if you are doing it without tools is making the change in size uniform. If you can do that, you will be fine.

jamesmith, here were responses from MDP and bobpuls in Bob's thread about making blades. I just wanted to make sure you didn't miss them.

I would mark it, then sand it with my belt sander. You always finish with sanding to get a smooth edge anyway. For 4mm you can use a fine scroll saw to cut off maybe 3 mm and then sand down the last part by hand.

Shaving or using a normal saw will do to much damage to the blade.

Definitely sanding .... the blades are made from soft woods so there will be no problem .... i suggest to use 120 grain in beginning if you want to grind more and finish with 400 grain .
And yes draw a shape before you start .

thank you for all your help, I have a professional sending machine, I would say it is a machine to shave wood very fast and nicely, it will be more even all around too. I think it should be ok
