for political correctness, the Chinese Taipei national team trials is happening now (3 to 10 Nov).

can see live streams here https://www.youtube.com/@HappyTableTennis/streams

to qualify for the national teams (the rights to play international), there are 3 ways to do it:
1) world ranking, top 40 in the world by the cut off time. Max 2 players
2) national champion, Max 1 player
3) national team trials, 6 rounds, 2 players per round, max 12 players.

so we are busy with number 3 now.

the players that qualified via one and two are, Lin Yun-Ju, and Hung Jing-Kai and women's side, Cheng I-Ching and Tsai Yu-En
Kao is injured but his world ranking will still allow him direct entries to invitation 10 events (smash/champions). We will see what federation will do about ITTF events, as he is LYJ's doubles partner.

The first round was concluded yesterday morning with 2 mens and 2 womens making the list:
Tsai Tien-Yu beating Liao Cheng-Ting (TTBL player)
Chang Yu-An beating Kuo Guan-Hong (prodigy)

womens side
Cheng Hsien-Tzu beating Chen Min-Hsin (prodigy)
Chen Chi-Hsuan beating Peng Yu-Han (both young players).

basically we have 2 KO draws of 128 each per gender and the person who wins it make the cut, or we can say it is a 256 draw, with players in the finals both making the cut.

so these 12 players + national champion will then come back in December to play a "positions" tournament.
world ranking player will be automatic placed first, followed by the positions from the positions tournament.

Taiwan's national team qualification is extremely harsh, as it is technically, re selected every year.
However, with that, this means it is also the fairest national team selection in the world, as you select yourself. If you make it, or don't, it is all based on a selection trials that is open to hundred of players per gender. Not some close knit circle that happens behind the scenes.

I don't really visit these national teams trials, but decided this year I should, as there are many young players that are showing great potential and together with my new agency roles, where I am placing players in leagues, I am also now placing sparing partners for pro players and also placing coaches for pro players and pro clubs. So it is now an official work trip for me and I am sitting in that hall as an agent.

I just had a peek at some of the livestreams and noticing that they are playing on Donic tables.

Isn’t the Chinese Taipei team sponsored by Butterfly. Will they be playing on Butterfly tables in the positions tournament in December or be using Donic tables?

What is the match ball they are using?

In Taiwan, the major tournaments allow bidding of sponsors, so it won't be the same brands.
this time, ball and table is Donic

December positions tournament is Chanson tables (Taiwanese brand) with Donic balls

I dont know if my observation is correct, but it seems like Taiwans top players prefer butterfly rubbers, while Chinese pros usually use hurricane.

Is there a reason for that, maybe a different philosophy ? @Tony's Table Tennis
I assume you are talking about forehand rubbers, since Chinese players use butterfly too, on the BH.

some also do use H3 on the FH, but Butterfly is more popular because of its quality and that many of them grew up sponsored by Butterfly.

still quite a few regulars that haven't qualified yet
ie, Liao Cheng-Ting, Li Yu-Jhun, I hope they qualify tomorrow (last round).

Chen Szu-Yu said she had to play 19 matches inside the past 6 days to qualify.... its extremely tough and hard physically and mentally to qualify for Chinese Taipei.
But in the same time, the most free and open national trials on the planet.

There is no favoritism or politics, you need to qualify by winning 6 matches in a row, or start from scratch in the next round.

@Tony's Table Tennis , I see that YYT has qualified in round 3. She's currently WR#45. SC Muscat starts in about a week. If she were to get into the top 40 after SC Muscat thus qualifying for the national team, does that open up a spot for another player to make the team?

I'm afraid not
there is a cut off date, if she made 40 before the cut off date, she didn't need to play in this trials and there would be that extra slot.

After YYT made it, she went back to her "spot in the stands", sitting in front of Chuang Chih-Yuan,
I was sitting just below her, sitting with the folks of Chang Yu-An during that moment, and I turned around to congrats her.
She was on the phone with her family, in tears, telling them she made it.
It was touching, she smiled at me saying thank you with a gentle bow of her head, while she was crying and on the phone with her family.

It was a hard week for her, as she had been knocked out in round 1 and 2.

She beat Liu Ru-Yun in the round 3 final, of which YYT lost to Liu in Round 2 (her first match of round ) the day before, Yeh was 2-2 and had 3 match points at 10-7 and lost 5 points in a row. She was in tears then too.
YYT also lost to a weaker player during round 1, she lost 2-3 in the R16.

So there was a lot of pressure in that Yeh vs Liu match in round 3.

Next up is the positions tournament.
Yeh is talented, and I told that to Chuang and his brother earlier in the year.
2 Pro A clubs wanted to sign her, but Chuang wants Yeh to focus on training and WTT.

So trials has finished, with LYJ and CIC, the above is the team for 2026.

I also used Green to highlight that they are juniors (U19). bold is players I manage, however more than half of the others, I also assist to a certain degree.

extremely taxing 7 days of competition, I don't like it, but it is the fairest selection on the planet and many national players from around the would hope they countries can have the same, clear, open, selection policy.
