for political correctness, the Chinese Taipei national team trials is happening now (3 to 10 Nov).
can see live streams here https://www.youtube.com/@HappyTableTennis/streams
to qualify for the national teams (the rights to play international), there are 3 ways to do it:
1) world ranking, top 40 in the world by the cut off time. Max 2 players
2) national champion, Max 1 player
3) national team trials, 6 rounds, 2 players per round, max 12 players.
so we are busy with number 3 now.
the players that qualified via one and two are, Lin Yun-Ju, and Hung Jing-Kai and women's side, Cheng I-Ching and Tsai Yu-En
Kao is injured but his world ranking will still allow him direct entries to invitation 10 events (smash/champions). We will see what federation will do about ITTF events, as he is LYJ's doubles partner.
The first round was concluded yesterday morning with 2 mens and 2 womens making the list:
Tsai Tien-Yu beating Liao Cheng-Ting (TTBL player)
Chang Yu-An beating Kuo Guan-Hong (prodigy)
womens side
Cheng Hsien-Tzu beating Chen Min-Hsin (prodigy)
Chen Chi-Hsuan beating Peng Yu-Han (both young players).
basically we have 2 KO draws of 128 each per gender and the person who wins it make the cut, or we can say it is a 256 draw, with players in the finals both making the cut.
so these 12 players + national champion will then come back in December to play a "positions" tournament.
world ranking player will be automatic placed first, followed by the positions from the positions tournament.
Taiwan's national team qualification is extremely harsh, as it is technically, re selected every year.
However, with that, this means it is also the fairest national team selection in the world, as you select yourself. If you make it, or don't, it is all based on a selection trials that is open to hundred of players per gender. Not some close knit circle that happens behind the scenes.
I don't really visit these national teams trials, but decided this year I should, as there are many young players that are showing great potential and together with my new agency roles, where I am placing players in leagues, I am also now placing sparing partners for pro players and also placing coaches for pro players and pro clubs. So it is now an official work trip for me and I am sitting in that hall as an agent.
