I bought this on e bay and the owner stated that he believed it was an old butterfly blade-plate has dropped off.
The rubbers were attached to the blade and appeared ancient.
Im sanding the blade to remove the varnish. The handle has been previously varnished.
Over to the experts......................

Quite hard to tell. I just could see it on my mobile. That metal plate on the handle looks a bit like Butterfly.
But from the time that blade was built, many companies designed handles that way.
Maybe somebody chimes in to shed some light on this here.

But nevertheless please do yourself a favour and DON'T sand it.
There are better ways to get rid of the varnish, such as acetone, or even nail-polish remover or just try to find someone who's experienced doing that.
But if you sand it, the top ply most likely will get a little damaged.
