if i am not mistaken

the rule of selection for the JNT was roughly


(1) take the 3 best ITTF world ranked players
(2) the winner of the National Championships (Jan2019) + the winner of the 2-round qualification tournament (==Top 12 this year)
(3) in case the winners of the events in (2) are already in (1) then wild card attributed to either a player who has had very good results against Chinese players or a young and developing player with a lot of potential

Ito and Mizutani are among the 3 best world ranked Japanese players , so Sato and Yoshimura Kazuhiro are the wild cards.
Yoshimura Kazuhiro has had quite a few very good wins on the domestic scene already in the last few years but reaching the final of the HK open last year was a result good enough to give him the wildcard.

As for Sato, she has a very good ranking, she is still young, but yeah, i thought Hayata would be the natural choice for the wild card given her outstanding recent form and given Sato is limited by her play style. Also, I thought Shibata or Hashimoto was doing better than Sato recently. And Kihara is very young, I thought she would be the most natural choice for a wild card.

I am more surprised by Sato than for Yoshimura K. Yoshimura M., Oshima, Morizono, Ueda, Yoshida... there are plenty of better ranked players than Yoshimura K. but they're older and there's little hope for them in the future. They already had their chance in the JNT. We'll still see them in doubles.

　これが初代表入りとなった吉村和は、リオ2016五輪男子団体銀メダルの吉村真晴（名古屋ダイハツ）を兄に持つ。気になる選考理由は2点ある。ひとつは2018年1月以降の主要国際大会の実績と内容の評価、もうひとつは国際競争力向上への高い潜在性があると思われる選手の評価だ。その結果、昨年5月のITTFワールドツアー・香港OP男子シングルスで優勝したことが評価された格好だ。

「日本人で昨年のワールドツアーを優勝しているのは張本と吉村だけ」と倉嶋監督。さらに毎年、世界卓球代表選手選考の指標となっている、世界ランク30位以内の選手に対する勝利数にも触れ、「張本が14勝、水谷が8勝、その次に吉村和が4勝を挙げている。その中で特筆すべきは吉村和の4勝のうち（世界ランク）トップ10の選手に2勝挙げていること。そこが国際競争力向上への高い潜在性があるとの評価に繋がった」と説明した。

その他、吉村和よりも世界ランク上位の大島（WR33位）と吉村真（WR28位）も候補に挙がったが、選考基準に則り近1年間の国際大会での実績と内容を総合的に評価した末、吉村和の選出に至ったという。

2 major points of consideration behind men's head coach Kurashima's choice of Kazuhiro Yoshimura - international results and international competitiveness. Harimoto and K Yoshimura were the only ones who won a World Tour title in 2018. In terms of wins over top 30 players, Harimoto had 14, Mizutani had 8, and K Yoshimura had 4, Niwa had 3, both Oshima and Maharu Yoshimura had 2. Out of those 4 wins for K Yoshimura, 2 were over top 10 players. Among K Yoshimura, Oshima and M Yoshimura, potential in international competitiveness was the deciding factor.

強化本部推薦を受けたのは世界ランク9位の平野と同12位の佐藤。馬場監督は「2018年1月以降の主要国際大会の実績と内容を評価した。（両選手とも）世界30位以内の選手4人に勝利しており、平野選手は日本人で3番目、佐藤選手は4番目に世界ランクが高い」と説明している。さらに平野については「（2017年の）アジアチャンピオンであり、前回、個人戦で行われた世界卓球2017ドイツ女子シングルスで3位になっている。彼女の特長である高速卓球は中国に通用する部分でもある」と話している。また、佐藤に関しても「カットマンで非常に守備範囲が広い。加えて昨年は攻撃力を増すよう努力している」と成長を評価した。

他候補には世界ランク15位の芝田沙季（ミキハウス）と同38位の安藤みなみ（専修大学）も挙がったといい、この2人も「世界ランク30位以内の選手4人に勝利している」と話した。

Same criteria on the women's side as explained by Mika Baba. Hirano and Sato were picked based on international results in 2018. Same as the men's, Hirano had 4 wins over top 30 players and she is 3rd highest in ranking among Japanese players. Sato had 4 wins over top 30 players, and 4th highest in ranking. Baba noted that Hirano's speed works against China and Sato has been working on her attacks since last year. Shibata and Ando both also had 4 wins over top 30 players, but this time Hirano and Sato were picked over them because of ranking.

　さらに、強化本部推薦として、男子はリオデジャネイロ五輪男子団体銀メダルの吉村真晴（名古屋ダイハツ）を兄に持つ吉村和弘（愛知工大）を抜てきした。現在世界ランクは６６位ながら、昨年は張本以外では唯一、ワールドツアーで優勝（香港オープン）している。倉嶋監督は「吉村和弘選手は張本選手に次ぐくらいバックハンドの威力がある。国際大会での潜在能力も高い。爆発力がある選手なので、世界選手権で一波乱起こしてほしい」と期待を込めた。

　女子は平野美宇（日本生命）と佐藤瞳（ミキハウス）を強化本部推薦で選出したが、２人とも世界ランク３０位以内の海外選手を４人倒しており、馬場美香監督は「国際大会での内容や成績から総合的に判断した」と説明。「平野選手は世界トップクラスの技術を持っており、高速卓球は中国にも通用する部分がある。佐藤選手はカット選手で世界トップレベルの守備範囲を持っており、攻撃力を増す努力も見られる」と話した。

　今回選ばれなかった大島祐哉（木下グループ）、早田ひな（日本生命）ら有力選手も、残り１枠を目指して３月の最終選考会に臨む。女子の馬場監督は「一発勝負の選考会で優勝しないと出場できないというプレッシャーの中でも勝てる選手に期待している。ツアーで活躍している選手もたくさんいるので、戦いに勝って自信を持ってもらいたい」と奮起を促した。

Kurashima said that K Yoshimura has a BH comparable to Harimoto in power, and has high potential in international competitions. Citing he's a big stage player, they expect him to cause a stir at the WTTC.

Baba said that Hirano has world class techniques and her high-speed table tennis works against China. Sato has a world top level defense as a defender, and has worked so hard on improving her attacks. She also looks forward to the final tryout where 2 players will emerge under immense pressure.

I wonder what pair of players JTTA coaches will choose to participate in the mixed doubles ? (in Liebherr...)

For the time being, Ito/Morizono and Ishikawa/M Yoshimura due to ranking. For doubles seeding, they take into account both pairs WR and individual WR. These 4 are the highest.

A big question is will they let Ito participate in all 3 events? We witnessed what happened at the Grand Finals.
