The result is a broken finger on one side and a broken heart on the other. But life goes on, and there is no such thing as re-do's.

If in the swing, of even zero mm, the ball strikes the finger of the bat hand, then noticeably hits the bat, ball flies off in unpredictable angle and spin, and ball goes around the net to land on opponent's end... even then it is a good shot and the rally is still active.

lasta,

Your response provides me a strong temptation to mention what else may be hurt that may or may not be suitable for reading audiences of people over the age of 50.

The racket hand is interpreted as the part that extends from the wrist downwards basing on the human anatomical position so if it hits the fingers and goes back to the other side, it is legal and play continues.

That means if you're good enough and don't mind being called dirty, you can legally give your opponents literal knuckle balls or backhand balls as a means to vary the speed and spin and still have offensive rubbers on both sides of your blade.
