I am an old fart who has just come into the sport recently, but I am enjoying the exercise and friendship within our little club.
The array of blades and rubbers is bewildering to a beginner as most here will know.
Starting with a Donic that I picked up for a few dollars moving on to a DHS 2002 premade and tomorrow using for the first time a custom bat just received.
It is a Dawei Crystal Carbon King 3000+
Fitted with Hurricane II on the forehand side...(black)
Hurricane III on the backhand.... (red)

I have not idea how it will go, if it will suit, or if I will enjoy this rig.
However I do know that it will not be the equipment that determines my level of play.
"The more I practice the luckier I get."
Best wishes from New Zealand.

I'm another of those old farts who has recently returned to playing after a break of a mere ( ahem ! ) 30 years or so - long story. I currently have two blades :-

Blade 1 - my trusty old Stiga Contra Super Carbon as purchased @1980. This used to have Yasaka Tornado on both sides - that's right, the orange one - and when I returned to playing I re-covered it with Tibhar Aurus on both sides. Why ?? Trade-off between speed/spin and cost.

Blade 2 - A Giant Dragon Super Balsa II with Superspin G3 soft on B/H and Superspin G3 Hard on F/H, which I purchased about a month ago. I chose this because the Stiga, although a lovely bat, has quite a thin and dainty handle and I wanted to try something a bit thicker and more suited to a man's hand.

I try to get use out of both blades. Currently though I'm favouring the Giant Dragon as I'm finding when I use the Stiga/Tibhar combo I'm having trouble controlling my B/H pushes, they all seem to be going high and long - I'm thinking Aurus is maybe a bit lively for my B/H. Also having started to use a larger blade I find I keep missing the ball with the smaller one !!!
