If Timo Boll is Federer then which tt player is Nadal? :p

I'd say ZJK or Wang Hao because no one Cho's better than those 2. They are both really emotional and incredibly aggressive.

As for who captures the very essence of a perfect athlete? (some of you didn't read the question very well **cough, waldner cough**)

I'd go with Wang Liqin as well. At 35 and he's still playing at a level that I don't think anyone will compare to. His forehand has still yet to be matched in my opinion for strength and speed. His footwork is slower than it used to be but he can still keep up with the younger ones with FH rallies or kill shots.

Hi Dan, just wanted to ask - do you ever play at HAKA sports complex in Bromley (Fusion)? If so, would be nice to have a chat, and hit a few balls next time!

Kreanga cuz of the arms ;)

And for best athlete I'd go with Wang Liqin defenitely. He is one of the most strongest, most integer, controlled players from the past decades and he has won many big titles, in contrary to others mentioned here.

Gotta clarify why I chose Schlagi.

He is not just a champion, he multiply himself into lots of other people (thru his academy).
Great heroes die when he/she dies, but he could continue his journey in different people. This actually happens naturally from father to sons to sons' sons etc.
That is the power of re-generation.
Most player just play for himself until they die, some are better by being coaches, Schlagi took it to a higher dimension.
He got what most athletes don't, a long-term vision about the sport.
He is not all about ME, he only train like 2 hours a week just to spend his time with his family and his students. Even tho he know that he got the capability to win more tours, he sacrifice it for more important and long-term matters.

He is a LEGEND !

He defenitely is, but that's different from being a good athlete ;) A good athlete does spent most of his time practising.

At 32 Waldner won the World Championship for a second time (1997), at 35 he got the silver at the Olympics (2000) at 39 he got to the semifinals at the Olympics (2004). Pretty impressive stuff. I think Wang Liqin is pretty amazing too. But someone said he is 35, according to Wikipedia his birthdate would make him 33 as of now.

But I want to know where all the bad boys of Table Tennis are. In the 1970's John McEnroe had a reputation for throwing tantrums and yelling at the refs. Jimmy Connors did a lot of that stuff too, and then there was Ilie Nastase, and his nickname was Nasty. He earned that nickname. How come Table Tennis does not have anyone like that. I would say Zhang Jike is probably the closest but it is not out and out disrespectful. I have to say, when I see that stuff I am entertained.

I also like the confident cockiness of Ricky Henderson when he was at his peak. In baseball he would often lead off a game by walking, take this huge, outrageous lead taunting the pitcher, steal second when the pitcher tried to throw to first on a pick off move, totally disrespecting the pitcher, and then steal third on the first pitch after he got to second. And all of a sudden you had a pitcher who had not even given up a hit yet, totally rattled and a man on third with no outs. I also liked how Muhammad Ali would get inside his opponents head by saying ridiculous things that were very funny but made his opponent angry. When he fought George Forman he kept grabbing Forman by the back of the head and yelling in his ear, "you hit like a sissy, how come everybody told me you hit hard?"

Now Zhang Jike is cocky and a little aggressive, but he is in great shape. It is hard to argue with Wang Liqin and J. O. Waldner. Their records speak for themselves. But, I will also go with Zhang Jike because he is in great shape (a lot of his power comes from how strong his legs are), he has won the World Championship in his first attempt, I think we will be hearing about him for years to come, and in interviews he has said stuff to indicate how great he thinks he is. :) :)

Ma Long is pretty solid as well. I love how much bigger Ma Long's right arm is than his left. :) Too bad Ma Long is so polite. :)

I see Schlager as an ambassador to the sport and a student of the game. In his career as an athlete he was an amazing player but I feel he has stepped back from that career a bit lately, as you said Yosua he makes great personal sacrifices for a much greater good, a very honourable cause.

I don't think it has to go to the level that u mention in ur post. It is okay to show when you are angry, but in table tennis it decifits u more than in any other sport. Player's with weak mentality like that barely get to the top, unlike in other sports. This cause the majority of the world top having very much self-control and setting a good example for everyone, in any sport. I believe we should be proud of that and not want to change it :)

You know I am joking around, right? :) I just thought it would be funny not to answer too seriously. All the guys at the top are really amazing athletes and in great shape. You have to be to do what they are doing. And antics do not have much to do with how good someone is as an athlete. :) Guys like Ricky Henderson and Muhammad Ali could throw their opponents off with antics, but they were really so great that they did not need to. Ricky Henderson stole 130 bases in one season. And there was never a heavy weight boxer as fast as Muhammad Ali. But his antics definitely got him in trouble in the ring a few times.

Maybe being cocky and disrespectful is the american way. I just really hope it won't become a part of table tennis.
