I wonder if choices are based on the coaches preferences/experience with the rubbers they select. If your student uses a rubber that you understand well, and you could effectively use the rubber/blade yourself and gauge your own performance as a litmus test for consistency, it would be easier to identify/adjust your student's play as well, no?
I don't coach. I'm not 2k+ rated. But I volunteer and teach students often. I find for me, the best way to get across to my students is to understand my frame of reference, and then shift it over to my students, so they can see from the same perspective.
