Holy crap that was the most shocking performance I've seen from Matsushima. Don't think I've ever seen a display of power like that from a Japanese player. Kid was throwing fireballs for the entire match. What I liked was that he was hitting with apparently 100% power but still had the composure to look for the ball coming back (something XP often scores a lot of points with).

When he's on top of his game, Matsushima looks levels above the rest of his teammates. But when he's slumping he'll just capitulate a run of points, or sometimes even just the rest of the match.

Wonder if being a streaky momentum player is just built in, or if there's a way to get that same performance out of him consistently and with a bit more patience and strategy sometime in the future.
As for technique, I remembered Sora was trained in China when he was young, there were clips of him playing against older kids in the provincial team. He adopts a wide fh span similar to Chinese style rather than a compact one like his teammates. But psychologically he's like Niwa, rely too much on sudden short momentum, fighting like this won't win him matches against top CNT player though

No forehand is on WCQ threat level. WCQ does moves to introduce his forehand that raise the threat level to extinction agenda. Sora is not close in that regard.
Adam Bobrow chose him as the player with the best forehand for a reason lol.

Hashimoto fully in control and has luck on her side right now. By far her most impressive shot, to me, is her counter off of heavy slow top spin. She is so good at killing that ball which easily has to be one of the more difficult shots in the sport.
Thr funny thing is that Zhu Yuling's no spin variation of that shot was giving her problems on the counter but no problems on the chop after a while.

WS F
ZYL 0-4 Hashimoto (-8, -5, -8, -5)
Missing those sidespin chops in late G1 and G3 proved fatal for ZYL, on top of the trouble in judging the length of those chops and the spin of those serves. Tried to get around by brawn in G2 and it was ugly. Went back to spin variations but the consistency she used to have was not there.

Stamina will be less of an issue after a night's rest, especially for those who rely more on their TTQ than form. Compare Ito (brains) with Hayata (brawn) when it comes to playing choppers.

Nerve could be a bigger problem, as ZYL said back in World Team Cup 2015, where she fell into Ri Myong Sun's pace and teething problems with the cellulose acetate ball that took away her variations with the celluloid ball, making it easier for choppers to cope with her game, and ZYL came out on top by grinding her down. This will be the first time ZYL plays Hashimoto using the ABS ball and Hashimoto could change her tactics just like Ri Myong Sun did and in case ZYL plays into it, only then will stamina come into play.

朱雨玲:半决赛紧张到腿不会动 削球能力要增强 (Zhu Yuling: I was so nervous in the semi-final that my legs couldn't move. Need to improve against choppers)

WTF !!! Honoka won this tournament beating 5 Chinese players without dropping a single game !!

When was the last time this happened ???
Is she going to overthrow the apartheid regime in Japan against choppers?

No miracle necessary! Awesome Honoka beats Japan killer ZYL 4-0! Not enough superlatives to describe what she did completely dismantling defense killer, ZYL. Controlled almost all of ZYL's attacks. Variations killed ZYL. I don't remember if Japan has their 2025 WTTC set already. If not, put her on the team right now. Put her on 2026 WTTTC team and let everyone else fight for a spot. Honoka Hashimoto LA2028 is a real possibility!

for 2025 its too late alas, except doubles (?)
if she isn't playing in 2026 with this kind of form its a disgrace. but if she keeps on like that she'll climb in the rankings and get in Top3 Japan which means an entry

Top 3 in Japan will mean she has to make the top 5 or 6 in the world and probably win a Champions. That will be interesting.
