finally played with Omega 8 Pro ... it's ... well, to be honest - I am disappointed. ok, I did play only for two hours, but yes, I was on the verge of getting also Omega 8 China, so i would have a nice, modern, fresh setup, but am really in doubt now.
my version is black, max thicknes. I can compare it with Omega V Euro (red, max thickness), and with Omega VII CG (red, well, only 2.1 thickness exists, so ...), as these are the rubbers I played with in combination to O8P ... so, during warm up, first surprise was - it is not as fast as I feared it would be. slower than O5E for sure. hard to compare with O7CG, as it is a bit different rubber in speed department ... but, what struck me, was lack of control. feeling was not too bad for such a thick rubber, but control was really missing. with looping it was a bit better, started slowly with higher, full rotation loops, then progressing in to faster, less rotation loops, it was okay, but something was missing ... then my hitting partner would start to loop and I could not passive block one spin. and usually I am the one not missing. 10 loops, 10 times over the table. then I tried over-rotating his spins a bit and it was a bit better, but always had a feeling, that the ball will go over the table (but it didn't). then I twiddled a bit and played with O5E on forehand, and all was good. was able to block, was able to spin nicely, place the ball nicely, had a nice sense of wether the ball is too long or just right ...
then I went to backhand, and things were better. except for blocking. balls were at least landing on the table but I never new if it is long or not ... the strangest feeling ever.
then we went into match play and it was better, but still lack of control or better said - sense of how I hit the ball. now, it could be max thickness playing with me, but I've played with max rubbers for my whole life.
short game, pushes and serves were good, good rotation, here the rubber was great. I good make nice backspinny short pushes or press on with long spicy pushes into the elbow or belly region ...
after that I changed O5E with O7CG (wanted to try something) and O7CG was also much better. except for short game and pushes, this is where O8P is really good, and if you played with O7CG, this rubber is the Queen of short game and pushes in my department at least, but O8P is really close. also with serve returns ... but the rest is ... I don't know ... maybe it's just me ...
now that I think of it - I also play tennis a lot (during summer) and we have a special jargon with these hits where you have no idea, where the ball is going to land - disconnected. that would be the right term. blocking, driving, you feel disconnected. you know you hit the ball, but have no idea how far it will go.
I am now thinking of reverting back to old setup (Omega V Euro FH and Vega Asia DF on BH) but since it was a looong working weekend it could be that it was just that - tired. so maybe I will give it another try on Wednesday or if I find some time, tomorrow ...
