Cho!

We all know a lot of the top Chinese players will yell "Cho!" after winning a point. But Dima and I think Timo too will sometimes yell what sounds like "Tolli."
My girlfriend is German and doesn't even know what they're saying or what it means but it might because they're yelling and pronouncing an ordinary word differently.
Does anybody know?
And does anybody know the literal translation of Cho?

It's really doesn't matter what was it's original meaning. It's for increasing self-confidence. I've heard cho, choo, chole, cholle, yo, yoo, yole, chosa, choei, yolei, chuu, cholee, choy. Not everyone uses the same battlecry, these are just alternate versions of cho without meaning. Or sometimes they have a meaning: for example jó (spelled [?jo?] or just to be simple yoo) means 'good' in Hungarian.

"Cho" means quite literally "ball" in Mandarin.

"Hao" is good, so "hao cho" would be "good ball".

You're probably talking about "cho le". Google "Mandarin le" and you might find a good explanation of why it's used. I really don't know much mandarin at all.

Im Chinese who had a Chinese coach and I would say that this is incorrect. BTW ball in Mandarin is Qiu. There are some who claim that Cho sounds like Qiu but as I native speaker, I dont buy that claim unless it has been pronounce like that in some Chinese dialect. There is no REAL meaning of Cho in mandarin and the closest word I can think of is "Cuo" which in english would be "wrong" which would also be "fault" in the context of any sport. Still the pronunciation or should i say "Pinyin" is still slightly different. Cho really is mainly meant to psych yourself up whilst intimidating your opponent at the same time. My Coach actually brought me up to shout "Sha" which translates to kill but as I grew older I changed it to Cho-le instead as it was less rude and awkward to my opponent.

I can't read mandarin, so it's very well possible that it's just a pronunciation. I'm 100% sure that when I've heard cho being used, it has meant a ball or sphere. This is in a non-table tennis context. However, no dictionary brings it up as "cho" no matter how you try to search it.

You're Chinese, you speak Chinese, and while it doesn't mean you're an expert on the language by default, somehow I think you have a better idea than I do.

Archo,

Please remove the foot from your mouth ASAP. I say that in a friendly manner as someone who has previously on the forums more than once jammed the foot in my mouth so severe it came out my tail end.

@Der_Echte : I have observed enough of Archo and Siva in this forum to stop replying or reacting to anything they say ... lets just say their energy and my energy does not really mix well so I stay away from even calling them out when they are completely and utterly wrong ... we have a word for this in my language ... the rough translation is that of a calf trying to do a bullfight without having horns ... you can fill in the rest .. :)

OK Monster, I shall accept that you were saying that for the benefit of those who potentially have the energy.

Still, out of all the things Archo has said and Der_Echte never intervened, I chose that moment to say something.

I don't blame Archo too much, I have had my moments where I wasn't particularly stellar either.

Yes Der you are right, I was trying to help the guys who were being misled. And to your other point , we all have moments when we weren't particularly stellar, and we continue to have those, but the point is do we learn from the feedback we get or the experience I have, I made a post elsewhere along the lines .... its perfectly all right to live in a merry world of ones own making , no matter how narcissistic or out of touch with reality that world is , its just not right to try to bring others into that world and continue to convince them that it is reality ...

From what I have learnt, I just try to avoid a conversation which pretty much goes along the same lines till the last of the infinite iterations @NextLevel and @UpSideDownCarl and others have tried to have with these guys because expecting a different outcome would be stupidity on my part and waste of my time and energy as well, precious or not ...

Nah, this doesn't take the cake. This is simple and funny. Not a big deal. I know a lot people who are native of China and every one of them I have ever heard talk about the meaning of Cho has been confident that it is a meaningless sound. I have heard it described almost exactly like SilentRain described it by several different people in person. But when I first read Archo's original comment, I was entertained but did not feel it required a reply from me. :)

It might be off base, but he will not cause harm to anyone's technique with this comment. Some of the ones that took the cake, to me, were when he was trying to pose as an expert on TT technique. In one comment he actually said, when we were all questioning the ridiculousness of his technique comments, and telling him he needs to post video if he is going to say such crazy things, he replied something like: "You should be able to tell my level just by my comments." And of course we could. But he was implying that he was a high level player and what we could tell was that he was not. LOL.

Now you have undertaken a difficult enterprise Carl , its a gold mine out there , for me it was the specific feedback for backhand technique to somebody a few days back , it was timed perfectly with NextLevel trying to keep him honest in another thread ...

Yeah. There are too many instances to count. But to me some of the funniest stuff was when he had just joined the forum and was jumping on any thread that had video footage of someone: he was saying things that were basically like: "I used to be bad like you. Here is what you are doing wrong. Here is how to fix that." And he wasn't even close to correct and he wasn't close to as good as the player he was bashing. Hahaha.

He has come a long way. But it is pretty funny to try and pretend to be an expert on Chinese dialects in the face of someone born in China. Hahaha.
