Yes indeed. As far as the time before Christ (BC), purple dye is quite on the rare side, thus making it expensive, hence makes it available only to the rich and the royal..
Oh, the Romans associated purple with royalty. The Ancient Greeks had similar associations, but not only with purple. This is where rolling out the red carpet comes from as well. When Agamemnon comes back from Troy, Clytaemnestra rolls out a red carpet for him to walk on. Once he walks on it, he is damned because, only the gods are supposed to walk on such fine material and by walking on the red carpet Agamemnon is basically making this statement: "I am godlike, because I have won this war and returned." This, for the Ancient Greeks, is an example of hybris. It is part of her setup for killing him.
So, roll out the purple blade and face the wrath of the Table Tennis gods.
