Justin controlled the match. You won the second game because Justin screwed up 4 BH loops but when he was hitting, you were in trouble. After the second game I was thinking, "don't hit to Justin's FH, just let Justin try those low percentage BH loops" but later Justin started hitting. You made too many unforced errors.

I didn't like the camera angle. To many shots went to the near person's FH and the view was blocked. I couldn't tell if the ball landed.

Don't feel too bad. He has almost a 200 point ratings advantage. With that difference, your chances of winning were slim. You didn't lose many points in that match.

Red shirt kid (Justin?) has really good serves with many, many varieties. You could learn some things from him how he varies the placement and spin to jam up his opponents. He had a lot more of an advantage from his serves than you did.

You lost a lot of points from serve receive especially on short serves because you don't lean forward enough on the lunge - your head is not close enough to the ball (reducing this distance will improve your control a lot) and you kinda reach with your arm a lot (because you pretty much play the receive with arm power only esp on FH receive). Similar to looping you have to really reduce your arm movement and power the receive stroke with your body, be it pushes or flicks or whatever - you rotate your body slightly for receives. This makes your receive a lot more controlled and also sudden/intimidating for your opponent - because they can't tell the stroke from the backswing.

From these basics, you can then add a lot of variations. You currently push quite straightforward - you need to think about how to disgust the opponents for eg heavy sidespin pushes, fake nospin pushes, disguised feint movements, flicks with underspin on them, short pushes to the corners, etc... the sky is the limit!

I like your BH chiquita a lot - you would win a lot more points if you increased your usage of it. With your footwork you probably could chiquita from the FH short corner to both corners - this will really drive your opponents crazy. For chiquita I found that going to the opponent's FH yielded a lot more dividends than going to the BH in general. You pretty much always won once you did that.

did you think i controlled the match in the last 2 games, my coach thought so.. just couldnt maintain my form to the end.. i led 7-4 and ended up losing 7-11.. as long as i kept the ball short, he couldnt flick or chiquita and i took my time to open with a flick. yeah sorry again about the angle

Hi Matt...

I agree camera should be on other side wide fh side for right players... you will see action better, also raise height of camer another 6 to 12 inches.

Please articulate what your overall plan was to win vs him.

What did you and your coach identify as his strong and weak areas? What are you able to do to setup and execute your offense? What were you going to do to reduce his attacking chances?

These are some of the things to think through before a competitive match.

How are you gunna limit him and enhance your chances.

You looked like all you were doing is feeding him what he wanted... light stuff to his bh and anything long all day. Looked like you were allowing him to attack then you counter, hope it goes in and you prevail. He is way better than you at that stuff, but you kept feeding the troll to your disadvantage.

Unless you are better than him at a counter game, quit feeding him, give half long to slow him down. When you open, go slow and heavy. Push deep to his bh and make him awkward. Push deep wide to his fh, block to his bh weak side then take over the point. Serve fast deep to his middle and counter the weaker return... you are good at that.

Matt, I think you play really well. Justin is freaking good and you held your own against a player rated about 200 points higher than you. Good stuff. I can easily see you getting up to Justin's current level if you keep at it.

Matt, be afraid......if you are in California somewhere, Der_Echte is going to hunt you don't and train with you and then it is all over. You will make him look sooooo good by how fast you get better while hanging around with Der....

He will also rope you into doubles and make it so you astound the opponents because he is really good at setting his doubles partners up to make the winning shots in rallies. :)

If you were of legal age to drink he would show you how to run the chicken and beer hustle and you would never have to pay for dinner again. :)

Hi Matt,

great game to watch!!
one thing I noticed was that your serves were almost all on the same line, not enough variation of placement.

You played pretty well, you’ll come on leaps and bounds in the future!!

Hi Matt,

I had discussed how to slow down and break rhythm plus look for advantages slash miminize yours.... and player should do that.

Very likely your coach has been training you in the same style open play and same shot selection... it is just that you are not as far down the path as Justin at this moment.

Junior players under these level of coaches with hours long near daily training and practice typically develop very fast.

It is almost like if you do not like the weather, just wait, it will be different. Well, not the same exactly, you will be a heap better in a year.

My coach told me to play short with him, but I couldn't keep it short :(, and he looped alot of my half long balls making it look like im just feeding him, hes definently stronger than me in the open game , my coach told me my inside table play was much stronger than him ( backhand flick and forehand flip) didnt use much forehand flick though because my forehand rubber was really worn out ( forgot to change )

yeah, couldn't get my serve under control here, would go smoking high or super slow when i tried something else. Usually, my long serve is killer...

just switched to a carbon blade too, i actually notice serve quality go down alot when theres pressure compared to my inner fiber dhs blade (no carbon), you can see my other video on youtube, where i was still using my dhs blade.. my long serve is pretty good there
