Why?

The tournament is soon after the Olympics and the very top players will likely need rest. At the very least, I wouldn't be surprised if the Olympians don't play. WMY and WCQ possibly but the result, unlikely.

So Gaoyuan would predominantly be called upon for his doubles prowesss and used as their second doubles option in the new circle, and it's interesting that SXY is chosen over QTY. It must feel horrible to be Qian.

But the team probably saw something in Xunyao's valiant effort against the Japanese in her last outing. The thinking is obviously to prioritise youngsters that have shown some potential against their arch nemesis in the past vs stability in the last couple of tournaments. And of course they're mapping out scenarios in which Fan is not in the team for one reason or another, and what to prioritise in such occasions.
