Weird. Fan Zhendong, Chen Meng and Ma Long all withdrew from the event. Ma Long who said that he wants to keep playing. Is that really their decision or is the CNT forcing them? But then why would they, since they can’t replace them with Chinese players anyway this time?

i guess with a heavy "Olympic gold medal holiday period", 2 of the players might not be in match form.

Very disappointing news.
It's good for Europe but it devalues the competition a bit not having the 16 best. History won't remember it of course but as we watch it there'll be a question mark and what if...
Hopefully all 3 will compete soon again next year because I especially want to see LSD V FZD and Ma Long a few times at least!

Though disappointing but not surprised as rumors about these three players would skip the WTT final were spread in Chinese social media a while ago. This just confirmed that not all rumors are pure speculation.

I don't follow the news that closely really but the competitor that he is I thought he'd be chomping at the but to show where he still stands in the current pantheon!
Or maybe I was just wishful thinking...

im not sure why FZD and CM aren't (combo of age/recovery/well-deserved break, point of their careers to slow down a little?), but we haven't seen them since so I didn't really expect them here either. and at the WTT China Smash recently it seemed like they were saying Ma Long was done playing the big international competitions. they were setting up a big moment with him winning but LSD had other plans
