hi

where i live we have a small community place in the cellar for the neighbours to meet, talk, play games etc. There is also a table for (mostly) the kids to play table tennis. we have a few very old supermarket bats which by now are so spin-less and dead that they are not even ok to play with on this level. so i wanted to donate a few cheap but new bats.

i was thinking of getting a few of either the Meteor or the Palio 2-star bat from this site

any opinions / better ideas?

thanks!

thanks! i will also have another look at the old bats there, in the unlikely case i can remove the old rubbers without too much hassle i was thinking of getting a few packs of "training rubbers" and glue them together with the kids, this might spark some more joy.

That's a nice idea! I'd advocate for a non tacky training rubber because the initial deadness and tack of cheap tacky training rubbers will not spark much joy in most recreational players.
I remember my first experience with 729 super fx and getting completely caught off guard by the sheer effort needed to get a ball over the net

I've tried that in the past but never found a cheap bat where the rubbers came off easily.
Actually, the rubber came off fine but it was as if the sponge was the glue!
After 5 minutes of trying to remove the sponge from the blade and getting nowhere I had to give up!
There are solvents I'm sure that would make things easier but we just bought replacement rackets

As you're in Denmark, maybe something like this would be enough

I agree with you that it is not so easy to remove the rubber on most cheap rackets. A glass scraper will help to remove it well and quickly.

*shudder* that will help remove the top layer of wood, too... Maybe use something plastic instead?

yes, i agree. was thinking something like the Sanwei T88-III or the Blütenkirsche 868, both are available cheaply in packs of two and should be bouncy enough. so far the kids are more playing some hitting game holding the bats with fists ;)

Very often, rubber is glued with a very strong glue, which is so strong and viscous that it itself protects the surface of the blade even from such a sharp scraper. At the same time, the sponge of the rubber itself is quite soft and is easily separated by a scraper.

Pf-4 is nice but if you can go for doublefish volant. Much more options for sponge hardness and 2.1mm rubber may suit modern games better than thinner rubbers. Plus they go for 12 SGD or less. Excellentvalue.
