its crazy to call Eugene that
he was a top 50 player in the world for a long time.

World events is representation from all parts of the world, so I think those people just don't understand how sports works.

But the inflation of world ranking points due to a "fair" continental point is very questionable and this has probably damage players more than they have helped imo.

at first, some people probably also saw Kanak as a beneficiary of such points, until he started to cement his spot by beating strong players regularly.
However, most of the players I know who benefit from this are mostly very humble. Like I even joked with a mate of mine saying you are closed to world rank 100 now. He was like brushing off and saying it was all thanks to 1 win in Oceania and he is far from WR100 level.... It is really only heming hu who is bloating his status, making himself sound like a pro player, while he still has some distance to even semi pros from my side., everyone else I know is very humble (which includes USA, Canada, Australia and NZ players) and it is not the players fault that continental points weighs the same everywhere. they do benefit though from it, but without that, we would never see them in many events. So it is a tough one indeed.

end of the day, it is probably easy for humans just to be a bit less bullying. imagine when you are 22 or 24 years old and fans are calling for your retirement. How is that sportsmanship? I believe sportsmanship is also required in fans.
It’s great that it allows more opportunities for the smaller nations to compete at world events but outside those smaller nations I can understand why fans would be annoyed by this. Imagine being a better player than these players from smaller nations but unable to compete due to limit per association.

Is the WTT player ranking best 8 events for the year? I reckon one year is way too short for the smaller nations as they are unable to compete often. I wonder if this should be change to a 2 year period instead. I believe other sports also have a 2 year ranking as well.

ranking points are valid for 1 year.
8 highest points are used.

@Tony's Table Tennis

Have the NZ players gone back home. I see Alfred Dela Pena at the back with headphones on watching the WCQ vs Jha match right now.

Can players still watch the matches live at the arena for free even if they are eliminated?

They would have a return date set
Probably still not at that date yet.

and when Japanese women comes on, like the anti Hayata campaign not so long ago, it was sickening to see all those hate messages too.
The China-Japan problem is like from decades ago and majority of the people typing those messages were not even born when Japan was the devil in Asia. But now, they think, the wheels have turned, it is okay to be online devil.

It is probably good the comments are turned off.
they turn it on to help gain traffic/traction.
But there are a group of sour people whose life mission is to make other people miserable, especially those players they dislike.
Wasn't it because of Hayata said something about the Kamikaze museum? Hard to fault the fans for using history against her when she brings up history herself, isn't it? If Timo Boll said he'd like to visit a museum honoring SS soldiers, how do you think this board would react? I suppose that can't ever happen since there are no museums honoring SS soldiers in Germany. Can't say the same for Japan unfortunately.

Lodging is probably not free though, and Macao isn't as cheap as mainland China. If they needed to self-fund the trip they might not have the money to stay there.

In the past, World Cup entries were by invitation and so free hospitality was provided.

I only saw Dela Pena sitting by himself at the arena in the livestream so I’m guessing the other team members went home as they may not have the funds to stay.

When teams such as NZ have to self fund for these trips do they just usually have the departure date after the 1st round since they know they won’t make it to the next round or do they pay extra to be able to change their flights if things change? I wonder what this NZ team did?

I can ask him, but I actually think it isn't that important.
changing flights is a very common job function for table tennis players.

He however would be flying back to Germany to prepare for the world championships.
He traveled from Germany for the world cup - separate from the rest of the team.

I will probably ask a bit later on
but previous trips, I have been told players share the coaches bill some times.

they play based on passion and pride (for representing their country). it isn't a freebie holiday trip.
I know for the build up, fundraising for one of the players started early in the year already... or maybe even end of last year.
TTNZ offers usually no funding for players or coaches. Coaches almost every time have their costs paid for solely by players. TTNZ has money, it just chooses not to invest it in high performance - this has been the case for a very long time

Do you know why the NZ players are forced to wear the team uniform at these events. Germany and Chinese Taipei teams were allowed to wear their own table tennis sponsored uniforms.

Had TTNZ covered part of their trip in some way then fair enough to wear the team uniform but I feel it’s not fair on the players to have to wear the team uniform and get nothing in return.

Because that’s the agreement they signed w Donic. It will have a negative impact on any players who have other sponsors, this is without a doubt.

Probably not as prevalent as the Oceania players but People say the same things for Canadians, Americans, and all of the Americas as well apart from Calderano. It’s why I have a lot of sympathy and support for the Oceania players.

Even my own friends (they and I are Canadian) were bullying Edward and Eugene (not cyber bullying, but saying amongst our group) saying they “are complete dogshit and should never touch contender events let alone the World Cup”
Just like you were saying that MLTT players like Kou Lei saying they were past their prime and MLTT is not a top league?

Just kidding, but you get the point. Not everyone expresses themselves civilly but their opinion on people's playing levels is what it is.

Do you know what the funding is like with the Australian players. Is it the same as NZ where they have to self fund their own trips as well and the players and coaches don’t get paid?

People say a lot of stupid shit, doesn't make it valid. Edward and Eugene have both proven themselves at the Pan American level so why would they not deserve to touch the World Cup? That's literally how that works.

And top American players are still in a completely different league from Oceania ones like the Baes, Dela Pena, etc...

Australia have significantly more player funding for team and individual events, NZ has effectively none.
