Jianan and Pavade plus the entire French team get some consolation for a disastrous tournament.
Japan might have discovered two new viable pairings for Ito to play.

They are professionals, they can handle it in a fairly meaningless match. They had already secured the #2 spot.
Either way, Pavade’s serve not being warned once by the officials is dubious, regardless if it is a meaningless match or not.

Tomo wouldve 100% called it out, given he called out his own mate Sora’s serve before lol

I think knowing they had qualified, the match on the whole was given that focus. I am sure it would have been an issue if they absolutely had to win.

So who is the villain for Japan, Harimoto or the crowd?
Harimoto, hands down. Lopsided H2H and he admitted after Paris 2024 that LYJ and F. Lebrun were someone he wasn't confident of beating even if he played to the best of his ability. Shifting the blame onto the crowd is not gonna fix that. The crowd at 2025 Ryder Cup was way worse and yet Europe still beat the US for the first time since 2012.

The match was meaningless but he hasn't played well since Asian Teams. Not sure what is driving it.

A Tieba user nailed it, predicting that CHN 8-5 JPN and that CHN's lineup was pretty much fixed.

As for losing to FRA, the consensus is that Harimoto was the culprit.

说实话国乒对日本基本没有变阵的可能性 (To be honest, there's basically no possibility of the CNT changing their lineup against Japan)

混团世界杯张本智和连输6分 (In the XTWC, Harimoto Tomokazu lost 6 consecutive points)

完了户上的眼神想刀了老盒 (The look in Togami's eyes was like he wanted to stab Old Carton)

Japan went 0-6 in games Harimoto played. How can there be any other culprit on the team? The only other candidate was crowd pressure.

It was obvious Japan did not play their best team against France. Obvious that Harimoto is not on their best mixed team at the moment. In a sense, these past few months have made Harimoto for LA 2028 more doubtful than I initially imagined. He has work to do.

wonder how long until hes contractually allowed to peel off those zyre rubbers
Is it really Zyre though? But he can always go back to D05 but his commercial blade is relatively slow, that's his style and no one's fault. I do hope in the short off-season they can figure some things out including rest.

definitely some style issues and tightening up too much / getting passive. but i think its a big enough change that can explain part of below average harimoto performances
Lots of players are using Zyre on at least one side, some cases 2. We aren't blaming Zyre for their performances. But i agree with you on the *possibility*, after all some pros switched back. But given that the players he has has lost to have been good players, often RPB players (lol), i think he may not have to go back as much as get better at a few things. But you are definitely right that going back is an option but I suspect it will be better to persevere and see wherher it yields fruit.

He looks lost like LYJ. No notable progress on his FH-oriented style. No real commitment after WTT SCT London 2025, at the very least.

(Before the match, we were 5/1 up; after the match, we were 5/7 down. Harimoto, you seem like the opposing team's mole, hahahaha!)

100%. I think the Japanese national championships if they go like last year will be the final alarm bells.

ive seen harimoto hit some of the most amazing shots of his life away from the table with zyre, and yet, i wonder is that the difference maker thats going to bring him success? its obv not a big deal and a pro can play with whatever, but i think his ability to control the ball close to the table has suffered, so in order to control he has to go very passive or back off more and hope other player misses (good ones dont). not that he wasnt doing this already but i dont think it helped. i feel it puts him under more pressure to go all or nothin.

besides Sora, who is both more or less a table tennis god and who in my opinion has benefitted from being able to see what Harimoto did successfully/unsuccessfully over the years for his development, i dont recall players doing anything so great with zyre yet (could be forgetting, miwa switched back already it looks like). but many players like franziska are hitting best shots of their life too. more adjustment needed and dont need to give up on it, just gotta accept if playing people right at your level then equipment differences matter until you have adjusted.

i think there could be something with the harimoto super alc and zyre that causes bad synergy too, with the super alc catapult and launch, but i havent tried them together yet! just my ideas

(p.s. thanks for stopping by the stream today - it was an honor!)
