I think a bigger splash will come awards season. Not much bigger, bigger nonetheless. 32M heading into week 3 is amazing for an A24 movie - it might even break even.

It's unlikely to have an outsized effect on table tennis. Niche sports are niche sports for a reason - not because of exposure or excitement - always due to their nature. TT will always be a quadrennial sport in spectators' eyes.

I had a different reaction. I found the main character (Marty Mauser) despicable. He will lie to you, hurt you, steal from you and then abandon you once you have nothing left he wants or if he is in trouble. I pitied the characters who came in contact with him.

Your reaction is a common one, especially for pepple who dislike the movie despite finding it technically competent.

That's a very broad generalization.

There certainly are places where table tennis definitely wasn't niche in the past, but the combination of factors gradually killed it.

Truls and the Lebruns definitely seem to have breathed some life into the sport in their respective countries.

Certainly, but also not inaccurate. Even in China, where table tennis is biggest, it still pales in comparison to something like basketball, where the are absolute cheeks.

I can think of other sports that will always be niche even if it’s exploded in popularity. Rock climbing for example. A lot of people climb, but who wants to watch paint dry on television for a few hours?

But a lot of cultural factors come into play. I also find gridiron football and baseball dull, but nothing is overthrowning the NFL in the US. Maybe I just don’t like to watch sports, and am a bad litmus test.

Reisman was not like Mauser, at least with the interactions I had with him. He was definitely an eccentric character and he might try to win money playing, but he seemed like a nice guy. He was also liked by quite a few other players in the area who had good things to say about him.

They can attack defend and place the ball wherever they want V any incoming spin and they do all this with shitty wooden paddles with crappy pimpled rubber. About as high in TTR as it gets would be my guess!

So... Marty bloody Supreme... Just got back from the theatre...

It's mostly good, but the runtime just isn't justified. The editor was way to generous, that thing should have been cut down to two hours flat. Also, too much focus on Marty getting the funds and not enough on him actually preparing to defeat the Japanese penhold inverted rubber nemesis. The dog subplot should have been axed entirely.

Romances? The protagonist has two love interests who are mere sexual objects to him and the rich famous one is basically just a mark he's scamming.

Best bit is him and the taxi driver hustling people at the bowling alley...

Nerd complaint: CGI ball physics kinda sucked, considering all the tech that's now available. A mid-tier video game developed in the Unreal engine has better physics than that.

Timothee Chalamet is absolutely brilliant, I believe his Oscar is half in the bag. It'll be him against Leo.

I'd totally watch a movie about Werner Schlager winning the WTTC.

Although, a by-the-numbers 100% fictional contemporary sports drama about an American kid trying to become relevant in an Asian-dominated sport would actually be kinda awesome. The mandatory love interest could be a US Olympic gymnast. Tensions arise from her pathologically overambitious parents who despise him, think he's a loser and don't believe TT is a real sport.

Protagonist ends up qualifying for the Olympics, pulls a super-sensational upset by eliminating a blond superstar l'enfant-terrible who totally isn't Truls is quarterfinals, only to lose the semis to a Chinese top seed in a heartbreaking 7th game.
