2026年1月2日、卓球界に大きなニュースが走った。世界ランキング3位、2025年世界選手権ドーハ大会男子シングルス準優勝者、ワールドカップ優勝者のウーゴ・カルデラノ（ブラジル）が、ドイツ発祥で、現在アメリカの卓球＆ピックルボールのメーカー「ヨーラ」と契約を結んだのである。
2025年12月末でXIOM（エクシオン）との契約満了が発表されて以降、去就が注目されていたカルデラノ。その新天地がヨーラだったことは、多くの卓球ファンにとって意外性を伴うものだった。

On January 2, 2026, big news spread across the table tennis world. Hugo Calderano (Brazil), ranked third in the world, the runner-up in the men's singles at the 2025 World Championships in Doha, and a World Cup winner, signed a contract with Joola, a German-based table tennis and pickleball manufacturer currently based in the United States.
Since announcing the expiration of his contract with XIOM at the end of December 2025, Calderano's future has been the subject of much speculation. His decision to join Joola came as a surprise to many table tennis fans.
Contracts between table tennis manufacturers and top players aren't simply a matter of money. The extent to which players use "equipment"—rubbers, rackets, apparel, shoes, and so on—is at the heart of the contract. Some manufacturers require players to use all of their equipment, while others offer flexible contract terms that adjust the contract amount depending on the extent of use. The more world-class a player, the more complicated it becomes to reconcile equipment preferences with contract terms.
Calderano signed with XIOM in 2018 and has since grown into one of the world's top players. Having used German rubbers since his junior days, it's likely that he didn't feel particularly uncomfortable with his equipment.
On the other hand, he's long been a Mizuno shoe lover, and isn't the type of player to stick to one company for everything.
By the end of 2025, when his contract expired, Calderano's market value had skyrocketed, thanks to his world ranking of third and his achievements as runner-up at the World Championships.
While several manufacturers expressed interest, Joola offered an exceptional deal.
Founded in 1952, Joola is a well-established table tennis manufacturer representing Germany. It was acquired by American Richard Lee in 2019 and is now headquartered in the United States. In recent years, the company has achieved great success in the pickleball market and, backed by its abundant financial resources, is reinvesting in its table tennis business. For a company that places particular importance on expansion in the Americas, Calderano, a South American native with a strong influence in both Europe and North America, was extremely attractive.
Calderano, who is currently based in Ochsenhausen, Germany, and mainly competes for WTT, is an iconic player who connects Europe and the Americas. It's the intersection of interests that led to this agreement, with Joola's strategy of once again focusing on the table tennis business and Calderano's career reaching its peak, driven by his passion for table tennis.
