昨日から合宿に入った岸川聖也監督はこう語った。

「合宿はまだスタートしたばかりですが、この2週間でコンディションを整えたい。現地入りしてからも数日間あるので、時差調整も含めて考えながらやっていきたい。戸上は重慶でのWTTチャンピオンズでは左膝のケガで棄権するほどの状態でしたが、ワールドカップでは良い試合ができました。松島はワールドカップの時から左肩に少し痛みがある状態が続いていますので、しっかりケアをしながらやっていきます。篠塚はまだブンデスリーガに出場しており、途中で合宿に合流する予定です」

張本、松島の「ツインエース」は日本にとって心強い。そして中国は、ルブラン兄弟のいるフランスとともに、日本を最も警戒してくるに違いない。

「松島はこの半年間でランキングを上げ、実力もついてきて、今、世界で一番勢いのある選手。どこからでも点を得取れるのが彼の強みです。以前はフォアハンドが弱いと言われていましたが、今では世界トップクラス。バックハンドはもともと得意ですし、サービスのうまさは世界No.1と言ってもいい。特にロングサービスが非常にうまく、ショートサービスとの見分けがつきにくい。多彩な得点パターンを持っています。この半年で本人も自信がついたはず。張本もずっとトップ10を維持して好調なので、二人の活躍は日本にとって大事な部分です。もちろん、3番手に出る選手の役割も重要になってきます」（岸川監督）

従来の大会方式は、予選リーグの上位チームが決勝トーナメントに進む形だった。しかし今回は、ステージ1Bの下位グループと、世界チームランキング上位8チームが2グループに分かれる「ステージ1A」があり、このリーグ成績によって決勝トーナメントのシードが決まる。

つまり、グループリーグで対戦したチームと決勝トーナメントでも再戦する可能性があるのだ。日本は中国（グループ1）とは別のグループ2に入っており、まずはグループリーグで1位となり、第2シードを確保したいところだ。

岸川監督は新方式についてこう説明する。

「この方式に変わったことで、初戦から準決勝のようなハイレベルな相手と対戦することになります。初戦からスタートダッシュをかけられるよう準備したい。ベストメンバーで臨む必要があり、選手を休ませる試合がないため、起用法は難しくなりますね。それでも1位通過を目指したい。そのほうが有利なシードを得られますから」

簡単に「優勝」という言葉を口にしないところが、岸川監督らしい。しかし、その言葉の端々には、確固とした自信を携えてロンドンに乗り込む覚悟がにじんでいた。

The traditional tournament format involved the top teams from the preliminary league advancing to the final tournament. However, this time, there's a "Stage 1A" with a lower group (Stage 1B) and the top eight teams in the world team rankings divided into two groups. In other words, there's a possibility of facing teams again in the final tournament that were played in the group stage. Japan is in Group 2, separate from China (Group 1), and their immediate goal is to finish first in their group to secure the second seed.

Coach Kishikawa explains the new format as follows:

"With this new format, we'll be facing high-level opponents, like semi-finalists, right from the first match. We want to prepare to get off to a strong start. We need to field our best players, and since there are no matches to rest players, it will be difficult to decide on their lineup. Even so, we want to aim for first place. That way we'll get a more advantageous seed."

　日本女子で世界ランキング最上位は6位の張本美。2年前の前回大会では中国との決勝で2試合に起用されたが、いずれも敗れて悔し涙を流した。その決勝を「忘れられない貴重な経験」と語り、今大会への思いを口にした。

　「前回は銀メダルで、今回は金メダルしか目指していない。同じ過ちを繰り返さないようにするということは、私が海外の試合に出始めてから大事にしてきたこと。“同じ選手に負けない”というのとはまた違って、自分の意識や行動で変えられることは常に意識している」

　最近ではフィジカルの強化に着手。週2回のウエートトレーニングを行い、身体の土台づくりを意識してきた。スクワットは、以前は30キロしか上がらなかったのが、現在は42・5キロを上げられるように。「（世界選手権への）出発までには45キロを上げられたら」と意気込む。

　肉体改造の影響か、久しぶりに会う人からは「大きくなったね」と言われることが多くなったという17歳。進化した姿で、世界の頂点を目指す。

　今大会の女子のメンバーは世界卓球初出場の面手凛（日本生命）らが代表入りし、新たな顔ぶれとなった。個人戦を含めて１０度出場してきた同学年の伊藤美誠（スターツ）や平野美宇（木下グループ）の選出がなく、２０００年生まれ“黄金世代”はただ一人の代表。早田は「２人がいないというのはちょっとさみしさがあります。当たり前に代表にいるような選手が、どっちかというと、私が遅れて入ってくる感じだったので。これも時代の変化かなと。私も来年、再来年この場にいるか分からない。それぐらい女子の競争率は高くなっているので」と率直な胸中を話した。

　今回で団体の世界選手権は４度目の出場。「誰かに頼っての団体戦を経験してこなかった。今までは誰かにエースを任せてもいいと思える状況ではなかった」と、１０代からエースの責任を背負ってきた。現在は、１８歳の松島がＷＴＴチャンピオンズ重慶で世界ランク１位の王楚欽（中国）を撃破するなど覚醒。「松島くんが強くなって安心して任せられるようになったのが一番大きい」。日本に層の厚さが出てきたことで、重圧も分散されてきた。

　張本は「まだまだ全然元気。中学生のような純粋な気持ちがある」と笑いつつ、「２２歳で安心して、自分だけじゃないと思えるのは初めてで不思議」と率直な感想も吐露。「僕よりも松島君の方が勝ちやすい相手もいるし、その逆もある。ただただ心強い。僕が２点を取れば絶対に勝てるチームだと思う」と力を込めた。

　大会については「中国、日本、フランスの３つが軸となって動いていく」と予想する。２８年ロサンゼルス五輪では団体種目が混合団体しか実施されないため、男子団体の世界一を決めるのは今回の世界選手権のみだ。「中国に勝つ力も五分五分くらいだと思う。世界卓球が爆発しないといけない大会。安定感ではなく全員で金メダルへ出し切る気持ちで、結果だけを求めて頑張りたい」と闘志を高めた。

　自身の攻撃は「結構パターン化してたところがあった」と分析した上で「それを崩して柔軟にと考えた時に、両ハンドで攻撃を仕掛けていく。自分の中ではスーパー攻撃型みたいなイメージ」と明かす。「女子選手、男子選手とか含めて、最近はよりいろんな人の試合をまた見るようになった。自分が整っていないからこそ、いろんな人のプレーを見て吸収することが必要だと思っている」とヒントを探している段階だ。

　14日には都内で行われた世界選手権団体戦（5月、英ロンドン）の公開練習に参加。「今回選ばれた5人で、どうやったら中国を倒せるか、それまでに負けないかということを個人個人が考えて、団結して頑張れたら」と意気込みを語った。

　一昨年の世界選手権団体戦は決勝で中国に敗戦。張本は第1試合、第5試合で敗れ、大粒の涙を流した。14日には世界選手権団体戦（5月、英ロンドン）の練習が都内で公開され「前回は銀メダルだったので、今回は金メダルしか目指していない。前回の2年前の大会では、特に決勝戦はすごく忘れられない貴重な経験になった。それを絶対に生かさなければいけないなと思っている」とリベンジを誓った。

　2敗を喫した一昨年の世界選手権団体戦は、第5試合で張本が勝てば金メダルだった。「試合前の心構えが『何で私なんだろう』みたいな気持ちもあった。普段だったら起用していただけてうれしいと思うはずだが、あの時はまだメンタル面でもあまり育っていなくて、ちょっとネガティブな思考になっていることが多かった」と回想。気持ちの弱さが敗因の1つになったという。

　現在の張本はパリ五輪など数多くの国際大会を経験した。場数を踏んだことで「試合前にもっとビビらずにやればよかった。そういう経験から今年の世界卓球は毎試合腹をくくらないといけない。起用していただけるなら、そこは自信を持って頑張りたい」と心技体で成長。同じ過ちを繰り返すつもりはない。

　これまでは相手の苦手な返球を軸とした展開も多かったが「両ハンドで攻撃を仕掛けていく。自分の中ではスーパー攻撃型みたいなイメージ」とシフトチェンジ。日ごろから同じ左利きの男子選手の動画を研究するなどして、攻撃の幅を広げてきた。「1つ1つ見つけていく感じでここに来ている。世界選手権が終わったらいろいろな吸収や発見があると思う。ちょっとずつ軸はでき始めている」。日本女子は直近で5大会連続銀メダルだが、打倒中国へ「新しいことにチャレンジしている分楽しみ」と高揚感を口にした。

　今大会は張本美和、長崎美柚（みゆう）、橋本帆乃香、面手凜（めんで・りん）とともに出場する。一方で同学年の伊藤美誠、平野美宇は代表選外。2人がそろって不在となるのは、12年ぶりとなる。早田は「2人がいないというのはちょっと寂しさがある。当たり前に代表にいるような選手。そこに私が遅れて入ってきた感じだったので。でもこれも時代の変化かな。私も来年、再来年この場にいるか分からない。それぐらい女子の競争率は高くなっている」と率直な思いと危機感を吐露した。

　自身は4大会連続となる舞台。悲願の金へ「5人の中で世界の大舞台を経験している数は、圧倒的に多い。どのタイミングで出されても必ず1点を取る強い気持ちでいきたい。それをプレーだけでなく行動で見せたり、試合中に自分に対して鼓舞をしていく感じだったり。そういうところでチームの雰囲気も高めていけると思う」と覚悟を示した。【藤塚大輔】

　岸川監督には「僕に気を使ってエースで使う必要はない。相手を見て、松島をエースで使ってもらって大丈夫です」と進言したという。我を殺し、まさにワンチームとなって、69年大会以来の団体世界一を獲りに行く。

　“二枚看板”の強みを生かすため、男子の岸川聖也監督に「ランクで僕に気を使ってエースで使う必要はないですよ。相手を見て松島をエースで使ってもらって大丈夫です」と自ら伝えたことも明かした。相性や調子を考慮し、オーダーを組みやすいようにとの思いからの行動だった。その上で「だからこそ僕が甘えて１点（勝）でいいやではなく、２点取れば絶対勝てるチームだと思う。今までの気持ちを忘れず、２点取る気持ちで頑張りたい」。１９６９年ミュンヘン大会以来の金メダルへ、大黒柱の責任感をにじませた。

　世界卓球団体戦代表にカットマンが入るのは、２２年成都大会の佐藤瞳以来。女子日本代表の中沢鋭監督も「しっかり判断して使いたい」と登録５人のうち３人を使うオーダーで起用法を思案する。ただ、橋本が一人、登録されているだけで相手は「カットマン対策」も行わないといけない。橋本も「相手側からすると、オーダーが読みにくい部分もあると思うし、対策する量が違うと思う。自分が出るにしても、出なくても、相手に考えを絞らせないためにも、そこで役割が果たせたら」と意気込んだ。

わたしもそうです。メデカルタイム以来早田選手は信用していません。何も解決無しですよ。何も無かったかのしていますね。何故あの時正直に話さなかったのですか？しかし貴方のコーチ岡さん、すごく情けなく思います。この事がなかったら、また違う見方していましたよ。馬場さんも信用していません。1番上のリーダーですら、何もいいません。本当に卓球協会情けなく思いますよ。

でも今は違う。

何をとっても張本が勝る。
中沢代表監督も今のエースは張本と言っているのに、
それでもこの「卓球王国」は早田をエースというんだからね。

Hayata was the ace until the Paris Olympics.
But that's not the case now.
World ranking, All-Japan, contributions to team competitions.
In every respect, Harimoto is superior.
Even Coach Nakazawa says that Harimoto is the ace now,
and yet this "Table Tennis Kingdom" still calls Hayata the ace.

If she wants to be called the ace, she needs to demonstrate that ability again.)
