Sawettabut, Ito, Wang looked like a disaster waiting to happen if Ito or Wang's ratio was even closer than it is. This format needs to be redone entirely. Do this at test events, not a world competition.

previous editions will have a few (4 players or so) fighting out for around 2 spots in the R16, while most of them are waiting there already.

this time round, you have 32 players entertaining the top 16 with a new format that is raising a lot of red flags
after 2 days, most of the original 32 are going home (except for maybe 3 or 4 in both genders)

Professional needs to be treated by professionals too, amateurs making rules, we can't blame professionals when they act like amateurs

nba, you going to moan when all the starters are benched? same with football.
In so many sports, there is a balancing act. Pros are not machines and its stupid to be wasting resources.

in most of the RR in table tennis, 2 goes through.
If this world cup had 2, maybe players will still fight for second place.
but since 1 goes through, it is meaningless to even fight the impossible. Will finish 2nd place give you more joy than finishing 3rd place? What gains are there? how many WR points, or how much prize money?
Aruna would want to keep his fitness and go earn money elsewhere, and I would do the same.
Maybe won't be a crazy exhibition like what we saw today, but will not play more than 50% level

what you are asking is for all sports to "continue fighting" for the sake of "being a professional" and serving no other purpose.
the problem is in the system, the format. The players needs to live and protect themselves and stop being a sheep and just follow useless or pointless tasks.

That's a good point, the solution would be for them to have something to still play for. Take the NBA example, when a team's out of playoff contention, players still want to put up stats to earn a bigger contract even if the management would like to tank for a better lottery pick.

Perhaps the solution would be to have 12 groups with 16 spots up for grabs. This way you get 4 "lucky losers" who can still move on. This is also a situation where an ELO type of ratings system could benefit. Apply that to all matches and every game can affect one's world ranking.

Sports is ultimately entertainment and to grow the sport, even when the points are meaningless, it is okay if the players are entertaining. This is what people need to accept if commercialization of the sport is important. All they had to do was plat respectably for one or two meaningless games. Is that really too much to ask?

There will always be the problem of meaningless matches no matter the format. There is no money in TT but in the NBA for example, some players do realize they have an obligation to entertain fans and try to do so. Table Tennis players are usually like that, when they are not, they should really reflect on whether what they are doing will help grow the sport.
