If ITTF ends up adopting this format for future World Cups, then it may want to consider basing the prize money earned on number of games won in the group stage rather than on whether you place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the group. It may prevent players from tanking their remaining games when they are confirmed to be already be eliminated/move on to the next round.

And/or tie the WR points to the games won, to stay consistent with the XTWC.

Karlsson - teaching others how to be a professional table tennis player. Well done.

Liang - thank you for your cooperation.
Karlsson: On behalf of the team, I extend my sincere apologies for last time.

It should've been obvious by now. South Korea has been the most cooperative team here. The last day was just garbage time and they kept it to a minimum.

last time there was a world cup, China could only send 2
now there is 6
lets see if both mens and womens cover all 4 semi final spots.
will be the first time in world cup history?

so, 16 players in a WC R16
previous editions will have a few (4 players or so) fighting out for around 2 spots in the R16, while most of them are waiting there already.

this time round, you have 32 players entertaining the top 16 with a new format that is raising a lot of red flags
after 2 days, most of the original 32 are going home (except for maybe 3 or 4 in both genders)

Ito smashes herself out of contention as usual. She hasn't learned to rally at all even after four years.

Miwa gets a crack at Wang Yidi to possibly prove her naysayers and whitehead's lineup wrong.

Hirano gets a chance to avenge her loss to Jeon Jihee at Asian Games 2022/3. If she's successful she'll play Chen Meng and prove her own naysayers + whitehead's lineup wrong.

Hayata gets a chance to fend off calls for retirement with another shot at WMY in the quarters.

Oh well, we might end up with 4 semifinalists as usual anyway. This time at the world cup.

you mean the one where Granny Ni was forced to play a meaningless match, because she was unwell, so she threw points away, so she can go back to the hotel to rest?

Professional needs to be treated by professionals too, amateurs making rules, we can't blame professionals when they act like amateurs
I see your point of view, TT athletes need to be treated better in many, many ways.

With that said, haven't we all played in round robin matches when the group winner has already been decided? Most of the time people still play the match and at least give some effort, even if not 100% focused.

well, in many sports, when its over, it is rest time.

nba, you going to moan when all the starters are benched? same with football.
In so many sports, there is a balancing act. Pros are not machines and its stupid to be wasting resources.

in most of the RR in table tennis, 2 goes through.
If this world cup had 2, maybe players will still fight for second place.
but since 1 goes through, it is meaningless to even fight the impossible. Will finish 2nd place give you more joy than finishing 3rd place? What gains are there? how many WR points, or how much prize money?
Aruna would want to keep his fitness and go earn money elsewhere, and I would do the same.
Maybe won't be a crazy exhibition like what we saw today, but will not play more than 50% level

what you are asking is for all sports to "continue fighting" for the sake of "being a professional" and serving no other purpose.
the problem is in the system, the format. The players needs to live and protect themselves and stop being a sheep and just follow useless or pointless tasks.

Today, ITTF has a lot to think about,
the pilot run in a world cup and then the format leading to players getting over it for the sake of ending the pointless match

That's a good point, the solution would be for them to have something to still play for. Take the NBA example, when a team's out of playoff contention, players still want to put up stats to earn a bigger contract even if the management would like to tank for a better lottery pick.

Perhaps the solution would be to have 12 groups with 16 spots up for grabs. This way you get 4 "lucky losers" who can still move on. This is also a situation where an ELO type of ratings system could benefit. Apply that to all matches and every game can affect one's world ranking.

Sports is ultimately entertainment and to grow the sport, even when the points are meaningless, it is okay if the players are entertaining. This is what people need to accept if commercialization of the sport is important. All they had to do was plat respectably for one or two meaningless games. Is that really too much to ask?

There will always be the problem of meaningless matches no matter the format. There is no money in TT but in the NBA for example, some players do realize they have an obligation to entertain fans and try to do so. Table Tennis players are usually like that, when they are not, they should really reflect on whether what they are doing will help grow the sport.
