I don't think you need New skills at that point, just execute those fundamentals with more consistency and shot quality. For example it would be nice to have a flick but I don't think it is necessary to improve after 10 months as most players at your level won't be able to serve short...

Not saying you are a bad player but obviously WCQ and ML have insane racket head speed so they might unlock gears in the blade that you (and most other amateurs too) can't unlock.

Can you avoid one side and only play one side mostly? if you can pin him on the backhand you could get used to the spin reversal. Or you could play him mostly forehand to forehand (unless he is beating you there too).

I think the slow loop is still a great shot against lower level opponents because when they block it they can either make an outright mistake or they hit a high arc block that you can kill with they next shot. Against pro players the shot is a dangerous shot because they are great at counter...

I was talking about the backswing. Any Player of course Bands the arm in the follow through. Lin shidong basically never straightens it. It is not quite as bent as timo or dima but still quite bent.

Is he playing more of an European style forehand? It seems his arm is pretty bent and not straight like classic Chinese forehand (ma long, wang liqin). Do you think this is a new trend in Chinese table tennis?

I guess he easily could have become a top 50 player in the world with attacking. He probably wouldn't have been as good though, don't think he makes a worlds final as an attacker.

I think the world is getting closer but the Chinese still have 2 big advantages: 1) better coaching and resources to study opponents than anyone else 2) they are less tied in leagues and tournaments and thus have more time to train and practice compared to other players who are very involved...

I think there really wasn't a clear #1. I think the year was like divided in 3 parts. Early WCQ dominated, then FZD and in the end lin shidong. Lebrun was very consistent but he often lost like in the semi or the final and never really went all the way.
