@Shuki We must remember a few things. The "absolutely never" pointers she is talking about apply to beginners. Every top level professional is breaking all of her rules, but they don't apply to them. Secondly, she WAS a professional woman player in China. The men's and women's game is...
  2. am I mentally disturbed?

Yes. You are reaching a healthier balance in your conformity - non-comformity scale. I'm referencing Ross Bentley on this idea from his book "Speed Secrets : The Complete Guide to High-performance and Race Driving". The book is obviously for motorsport athletes, but it applies to table tennis...
  3. Against spin vs with spin.

So we agree on the concept of a chopper and looper essentially reaching a point where they could keep hitting and it'd go on forever until the rubber would wear out if nothing changes?
  4. Against spin vs with spin.

Let us also remember that looping an inverted chopped ball and a pips chopped ball is different. Pips don't just keep adding spin forever: otherwise Europeans would never win against choppers with their nonstop looping, but pips directly increase the amount of backspin that is on the ball when...
  5. Against spin vs with spin.

I can't offer an empiric view on this because that is what telemetry equipment is for, but my "impression" of looping backspin is that there must be great care in not letting the spin overwhelm your own. For topspin, I feel as if I can use the topspin on the incoming ball to generate pace and...
  6. Having trouble achieving fluidity in easy drills with friend

Pay attention to when in the bounce trajectory you are taking the ball. Most likely, some shots are rushed and early, some on the bounce as you would want, and some late. Follow everyone's advice, but also pay attention to your contact timing. If it's terribly inconsistent, try to get it to a...
  7. UpSideDownCarl Looping In NYC's Chinatown

I understand the point you're trying to make. I consider my shot quite solid for my level, because it's at least sound in it's execution and consistent in how I perform with it, barring some ball reading and timing issues when dealing with difficult shots, that I am working on. Still, my body...
  8. Wang Liqin Stiga Clipper

Living the dream. Your stroke is excellent as well.
  9. What Causes This To Happen?

I agree with ttmonster. I would not exactly say that what is happening in the 1st gif is wrong, but it's just being executed in an undesirable way due to unfavorable body positioning.
  10. What Causes This To Happen?

@Carl He begins at roughly the same position in both, but there is a little more sidespin and the ball is traveling more towards him in the 2nd gif. I do not believe the problem is reaching out of position and causing a bad stroke, but instead reacting to the slightly different placement.
  11. UpSideDownCarl Looping In NYC's Chinatown

@NextLevel I understand. Well, you can at least feel content knowing that I don't think I'm some kind of professional, elite athlete, nor do I expect anyone else to be. The subjective experience for said elite athletes must be so different from our subjective experiences that it's really not...
  12. What Causes This To Happen?

Our strokes are somewhat similar, so I think I can offer something. Your stroke is very good for your level, by the way. Most likely, as ttmonster has said, the ball is a tiny bit short and you have read it correctly and are reacting to it, but not in a desirable way. Your timing appears...
  13. UpSideDownCarl Looping In NYC's Chinatown

Jesus. I just have a preference for longer, more open strokes, and find very few more closed and bent arm strokes aesthetically pleasing. It doesn't make them any worse inherently, just because they don't suit my particular aesthetic. I don't understand the fuss.
  14. UpSideDownCarl Looping In NYC's Chinatown

Carl, I'm not going to read your post. I stopped at the point where you failed to differentiate "similar stroke" and "stroke of same quality and consistency". What I meant is that it is very likely that the two players have been influenced by the same people (Perhaps the far lower rated player...
  15. UpSideDownCarl Looping In NYC's Chinatown

@ttmonster Your stroke looks alright to me, and it seems the person next to you is also playing with a similar stroke, so I assume you have got it drilled in by a coach. It's not exactly beautiful IMO but the execution looks good, if you know what I mean. @NextLevel Woah, calm down, Dickens...
  16. UpSideDownCarl Looping In NYC's Chinatown

Carl, that's good, and I'd want to get everyone's input to improve my own knowledge and play, but have you ever considered that perhaps you don't quite understand the gist of what I am talking about? EDIT: And why would you NOT comment on something that is wrong if I have posted videos of me...
  17. UpSideDownCarl Looping In NYC's Chinatown

That's why I emphasized "never". There's plenty of cases where you do want to do that ie: looping heavy backspin, sidespin loops etc. @Carl You are not explaining why what I say is nonsense, apart from claiming that top level coaches who coach professionals are wrong because they teach...
  18. UpSideDownCarl Looping In NYC's Chinatown

Point noted. I'll try. Although, what contradicting opinions were in my sentence? Following through across the body doesn't have anything to do with follow through height. Following through above the head means that you must follow through above the forehead. What is contradicting what?
  19. UpSideDownCarl Looping In NYC's Chinatown

It's just a way to say "Most people follow through too low and should try following through higher". Perhaps Carl feels nothing wrong with the movement, but that feels mighty awkward when I did it now. I've seen this idea that you should never follow through across your body, or that you...

If in doubt, go higher, but not lower!
