https://www.hk01.com/article/60394703

("I think this might be my last one."

Wang Chuqin further remarked, "I feel this might be my last one [Asian Games]. I view my table tennis career as a sort of spiral—there are ups and downs, good times and bad—and I think I just need to accept and embrace it all." After facing various setbacks, Wang believes in the importance of reflection: "I hope to really learn from this; I see it as a new challenge, as I feel I am walking a path that no one has taken before. The issues I’m encountering differ from those faced by key players in the past, so I need to give this serious thought and draw the right conclusions." His mixed doubles partner, Sun Yingsha, has also been plagued by injuries; she suffered defeats in both the mixed doubles and women's singles finals against national teammates. "Little Demon Queen" also admitted that she has reached her physical and mental limits, stating, "The Nagoya Asian Games might be my last; five years feels like an incredibly long time.")

https://www.hk01.com/article/60394411

(29-year-old Doo Hoi Kem may have finished the last Asian Games, aiming straight for Olympic and World Championship doubles medals

Ah Doo, who was "bandaged up" in the quarterfinals, said she had strained her hand muscles after the mixed doubles and singles matches two days ago. Regarding whether she will compete in the next Asian Games, 29-year-old Doo Hoi Kem said, "I think there should be no more." Perhaps the things four years from now are too far away, Doi Hoi Kem said, "Los Angeles Olympics and next year's World Championships will have doubles events again, we will move towards this goal." After winning the medal and having a happy day, the two have to pack up their mood and leave for Beijing tomorrow to prepare for the China Smash.)

(Doo has historically partnered with right-handed players, so she was pleasantly surprised by the breakthrough achieved in her first collaboration with left-hander Ng Wing-lam: "I’ve always played alongside right-handers, so I didn't have much confidence going into this. However, we have a great relationship off the court; we know each other's playing styles well, and in a sense, we’ve translated that off-court chemistry into our table tennis game." She also believes there is room for improvement: "We’ve identified various issues at every tournament—shortcomings in both technique and mindset. I think with more training, we’ll mature further. Since the women's doubles event has been added to the Los Angeles Olympics and the Women's Doubles World Cup is coming up next year, we are working hard towards that goal." When asked if she would compete in the next Asian Games, Doo admitted that this edition might well be her last.)

The Beautiful Island of 23M lost to the Fragrant Harbor of 7.5M?

we still see people on the island endlessly

(Even Macao has won a gold medal.
It’s incredible.
Macao has a population of just several hundred thousand.
Whenever people mention losing to the Mainland, the excuse is always:
"The Mainland has 1.4 billion people,
so they can produce a vast number of athletes."
They talk as if these competitions
don't place limits on how many athletes
each country or region can send.
It’s really just a way to comfort themselves—
a way to kid themselves.
But what about losing to team Hong Kong this time?
Aren't you supposed to be "supporting" Hong Kong?
You talk about supporting them, yet your sports performance lags behind Hong Kong's,
and your wages are lower than Hong Kong's, too.
What exactly is it that you're supporting?

So, Hong Kong compatriots, just look at this.
We—especially those who have supported me—
have chosen the right path.
Look at this truly unprecedented glory.
Many people analyze sports achievements
to see what they signify;
they represent a region's capabilities.
Look at Hong Kong, China—they’ve done an amazing job this time.)

Failing to win where it matters, just like Togami. Overrated and good-for-doubles as per the South Korean media. LOL

사실 신유빈은 질 수밖에 없었다[AG 초점] (Is Shin Yubin's fame a bubble [overrated]?... In fact, Shin Yubin was bound to lose [AG Focus])
https://sports.hankooki.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=6940349

(Shin Yubin is a leading star of South Korean table tennis. She garnered immense media attention and starred in numerous advertisements, establishing herself as the premier female sports star of her time. However, a defeat of this nature sparked talk among the public that she was "overhyped"—suggesting that the attention she received was disproportionate to her actual skill.

There is some validity to that point. Shin Yubin is not a player who dominates the era in the way An Se-young does. However, in terms of domestic recognition and popularity, she certainly does not lag behind An Se-young.

Yet, there is a crucial fact to consider: Shin Yubin is a player with distinct strengths in doubles. Just as An Se-young boasts world-class skills in singles, Shin Yubin has long distinguished herself in doubles events. It is unfair to evaluate Shin Yubin solely based on her singles performance.

In fact, Shin Yubin won a gold medal in women's doubles alongside Jeon Ji-hee at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. She is currently partnering with Joo Cheon-hee, and as the world No. 5 pair, they are well-positioned to contend for a medal.

She is also considered a strong gold medal contender in mixed doubles. The duo of Shin Yubin and Lim Jonghoon holds the world No. 1 ranking. On the 23rd, they secured a victory in just 15 minutes during their Round of 16 match against the Kazakhstani pair. Shin Yubin’s quest for a second consecutive Asian Games gold medal is effectively just beginning.

Shin Yubin suffered a crushing defeat in her head-to-head match against Hayata. However, she has always had notable weaknesses in singles. Everyone has their own niche where they thrive. The real challenge for Shin Yubin—a powerhouse in doubles—starts now.)

신유빈이 보여준 나눔의 품격 ("Earn money like a dog, spend it like a king"… Shin Yu-bin demonstrates the true class of giving)

(Shin Yubin must be fed up… Snatched bronze in Paris → Crushed again at the Asian Games. "Extremely weak against Japan's Hayata with 0-8 losses." A true test of skill against her nemesis, China Smash, for the quarterfinals)
https://www.spotvnews.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=1011880

(Their relationship off the court cannot be summed up simply by the term "arch-rivals."

After defeating Shin Yubin at the European Smash last year, Hayata revealed in an interview with Japan's TV Tokyo that she has special feelings for Shin Yubin, with whom she competed in the bronze medal match at the Paris Olympics.

She expressed her wish for her to have a good game, noting that she is a little different from other players as they have experienced tough matches against each other on the big stage of the Olympics.

However, there is no compromise in the match.

Hayata is also wary of Shin Yubin's growth in the current Chinese battlefield.

She told Rallys, "We have faced each other two or three times this year. When I compete against a player I have a losing record against, I try to change something. I think Shin Yubin will also make some changes."

She added, "I am the type of person whose body actually freezes if I prepare too much. It is extremely important to respond according to my condition at the moment," predicting the match against Shin Yubin with change and response as the keywords.

...

Attention is focused on whether Shin Yu-bin can finally put an end to the dreaded 'Hayata jinx' this time.)

Finally Defeats Japan's Ace, Who Had 9 Consecutive Losses, Advances to WTT Quarterfinals)
https://www.sportschosun.com/sports-news/2026-10-08/202610080100056810003643

(On the 8th, Shin Yubin defeated Japan's Hina Hayata (world No. 6) 3-2 (10-12, 13-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-9) in the Round of 16 of the women's singles at the 2026 World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash, held at the Shougang Park Infinity Arena in Beijing. Shin Yubin had finally overcome Hayata.

Shin Yubin had faced disappointing results at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, which concluded earlier this month. At the 2023 Hangzhou Games, she had won a gold medal in women's doubles alongside Jeon Ji-hee—a feat achieved for the first time in 21 years. Given those fond memories, many had high hopes for her performance in this, her second Asian Games appearance.

However, the outcome was bitter. She failed to reach the finals in the women's team and mixed doubles events, settling for bronze medals. She was also eliminated in the quarterfinals of both the women's doubles and singles competitions. The disappointment was inevitably deep, given the high expectations.

She could not simply wallow in tears. With less than two years remaining until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, she had to use the Asian Games setback as fuel to work even harder. Immediately entering the WTT tournament, Shin Yubin finally defeated her Japanese nemesis. She had previously faced Hayata nine times and lost on every occasion; notably, it was Hayata who had defeated her in the bronze medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.)

Asian Games close with praise, lessons for organisers
https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/aichi-nagoya-2026-closes-with-praise-lessons-for-organisers
Despite the problems, the OCA said the sporting results demonstrated the success of the Games; 54 world records, 89 Asian records, 212 Asian Games records and 11 Junior World records set during the competition. OCA Director General Husain Al Musallam said the sporting performances were among the strongest in Asian Games history, highlighting that 40 of the 45 national Olympic committees had won at least one medal.

The organisation also pointed to the financial performance of the event. According to the OCA, revenue from marketing, sponsorship and broadcasting increased by around 19% compared with the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2022. Officials also cited television and digital audiences as evidence of the Games' reach.

Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the Olympic Council of Asia, also expressed his appreciation to the organisers for creating an environment in which the athletes could thrive in their pursuit of excellence. "We have seen how Asia can rise with 'Imagine One Asia'," he said, adding that the athletes had left a legacy to be proud of in terms of world records, Asian records and Asian Games records. "You raised the bar for Asian sport," he concluded.

However, the Games also raised questions about Japan's ability to host another Olympics. The country has traditionally been regarded as a reliable organiser of major sporting events, but the problems in Aichi-Nagoya have damaged that reputation.

"If Japan were to bid for the Olympics again, trust in Japan may have fallen and it might be harder to win a bid," Hirokazu Arai, a professor specialising in sports psychology, told Agence France-Presse. "And within Japan, people may take the view that if these kinds of things are going to happen, we don't need the Olympics."

The Asian country is still reeling from the Covid-delayed Tokyo Olympics, which tested the local committee's organising skills and was later also overshadowed by cost overruns and corruption. The country had hoped to stage the Winter Olympics within its borders, but ultimately Sapporo's bid for the 2030 was dropped because of a lack of public support.

JOC President Hashimoto, however, said the Asian Games had "reaffirmed my belief in the value of hosting international sporting events in our country" and ventured that Sapporo's bid could be revived. She conceded that Aichi-Nagoya received harsh criticism, but noted that "this is all part of the Games, but we need to analyse those issues so we can tackle them for the next future opportunity".

KSOC chief gives Aichi-Nagoya 2026 an 'F' for organisation
https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/ksoc-chief-gives-aichi-nagoya-2026-an-f-for-organisation
Ryu Seung-min criticised Asian Games officials over various issues that have plagued the event, which the president of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee says are affecting his team's performance.

"If the lowest possible grade for the organising committee's operations is C, I would give them C. If F is possible, I would give them F," the former Olympic champion in table tennis told reporters this week. In a press conference at the 'Port Messe Nagoya', he stressed that he was "simply stating exactly what the athletes are feeling" and ventured that "many people, not just me, will feel the same way."

Compare Harimoto's response with WCT's.

(Asian Games | Harimoto Tomokazu reacts to shock early exit: Practically a crushing defeat)
https://app.xinhuanet.com/news/article.html?articleId=202609262e335b897fa24419ba8427397960d973

(Harimoto Tomokazu said, "If you look solely at the match itself, I’d say it was practically a crushing defeat. There are many reasons for it, but in competitive sports, the result is everything."

In the mixed zone after the match, Japanese media asked Harimoto for his thoughts on the fact that Noshad was suspected of serving illegally on multiple occasions. He replied, "If I had managed to handle his serves better today, I might have won. That said, in previous matches where I beat him, I didn't lose because of that issue."

"But without TTR (video review) available, the umpire has to make calls based on what they see in real-time. Players have competed and won under these conditions in the past, and I’ve had similar issues pointed out against me before," Harimoto said. "Of course, I wanted to go further in the singles event. I need to face this defeat squarely. No matter the reason for the loss, it shows I still have shortcomings. Moving forward, I just have to keep identifying those weaknesses and getting stronger, step by step.")

(In another quarterfinal match held that day, Matsushima Sora lost 2–4 to China's Lin Shidong, marking the elimination of the entire Japanese squad from the men's singles competition.

"After all, I was competing in four events, and the schedule was truly grueling," Matsushima said. "I felt like my fatigue level had gone beyond 100%. I played this match while pushing right up against my physical limits, so it was certainly a very tough battle."

Matsushima praised Lin Shidong's performance, noting, "Team China has so many outstanding players. After losing in the team event, his determination to avoid another defeat was likely even stronger than mine. Ultimately, I think I was outmatched in terms of concentration and the will to win."

Hayata 1-4 SYS (-6, -7, 9, -9, -5)
...
G2 40, 41, 61, 65 TO for Hayata, 68 Hayata: やばい/shit, 610, 710, 711
Hayata giving the thumbs up to her team (?) in the spectators after that point where she got SYS stepping around tells me she had people come up with specific tactics for her beforehand (exploiting SYS's wide FH by taking the ball a little late).
...
Good try by Hayata. However, the fact that she saved these tactics for WS rather than WT undeniably confirms that she has forgone her team spirit in the pursuit of individual honor way more than Ito has. Poor Harimoto for giving her all in WT F that was a lost cause from the get-go. Hirano and Hashimoto could've done much more for the team.
The latest writeup by TAKAGI Mina confirms my observations (the very tactic being the "good contact" long push that I wrote about in 4/2025) and yet again reinforces my opinions of Hayata at Asian Games. Even Takagi can't help but point out unity as the difference.

(The "Reasons for Defeat" According to Hayata and Harimoto

...

These figures highlight the challenges facing the Harimoto/Hayata pair.

"We were outplayed in every technical aspect," said Hayata. "As for our own issues, the momentum shifts drastically in the first and third games; the only solution is to work on that in practice."

Harimoto also commented, "This match really exposed our weaknesses. There is a lot to reflect on, so I want to improve on the issues we identified, even if only a little. We just have to keep working hard."

Women's doubles will be an official event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, returning to the program for the first time in six Games since the 2004 Athens Olympics.

It is highly likely that Japan will aim for the women's doubles gold medal with the Harimoto/Hayata pair, while China will likely field the Wang Manyu/Kuai Man pair. This defeat should provide valuable clues for a future comeback.

"Chinese Players Become Many Times Stronger on the Big Stage"

Hayata also shared the following observation:

"Chinese players become many times stronger than usual on big stages like the Asian Games, World Championships, and the Olympics."

Hayata herself, however, also demonstrated a new technique at the Asian Games.

It happened during the women's singles semifinals. Facing world champion Sun Yingsha for the 21st time—having lost all 20 previous encounters—Hayata opted for a different return strategy against Sun's serve, which typically carried forward spin and accelerated as it bounced on the table.

She abandoned the "stop" return—which had previously risked popping the ball up—in favor of a long push down the line, a tactic designed to neutralize the power of Sun's third-ball attack.
However, what makes China so formidable is that if you reveal a new technique, they analyze it, devise countermeasures, and overcome it by the next time you face them.

Hayata’s former personal coach testifies: "Japan isn't lagging behind. But..."

Ishida Daisuke, who served as Hayata’s personal coach for about a decade leading up to the 2024 Paris Olympics, shared the following insight:

"People often talk about the high level of China's countermeasures, but Japan isn't lagging behind in that regard. The issue is that there are no training partners in Japan capable of replicating the quality of Sun Yingsha’s shots. In contrast, China has players who can mimic the ball characteristics of Hayata or Harimoto, and they even use powerful male players as sparring partners."

This difference in training environments—combined with their sense of unity—is a major weapon for China.

Looking ahead to the Los Angeles Olympics, the players Japan must ultimately break through against are China’s top two: Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu.

There are two years left until the LA Games. China may still seem a long way off.

Nevertheless, at the recent Asian Games, the Japanese men's team defeated China to win the team gold medal, forcing open a door that had long remained shut.

Believing in that potential, now it is the women's turn.)
