how do you avoid the trap of...

-losing to a defender and thinking you need a faster/harder setup

-losing to a player with much slower setup than you and thinking you need slower setup

all these will take you the ej path.
how do you avoid?
feel free to add any other trap you experienced.

Think about what you need to do differently with the current setup you have and why you lost.

If someone has a slower game than you, you need to adapt and not rush your shots. Easily said I know because it does take some time and if you're playing a league match or a competition then you obviously don't want to be down 0-1 or even 0-2 before you've figured out what you need to do differently. After the first set you need to at least really reconsider and take your time if your opponent is slowing the game down.

1.Maybe being yourself the defender/player with the slower setup?
2.Spend all your TT-budget on training so you don't have any money left for EJ-ing.
3.Go to a mentalist/psychologist so he brainwashes you so you can't go EJ any more.
4.Before playing a defender break his hand.(works for other types of players too)
5.Before playing the mentioned players break their rackets(doesn't work for all types of players, pros can defeat you even with a smartphone for example, and that may lead you to want to buy a new smartphone, or if they are fit enough, they may apply themselves suggestion No.4)
6.Pay the umpire so you always win
7.Pay the ITTF so they make some rule changes so no defenders will be allowed to play table tennis
8.Convince the other player to use the same setup as yours.

all these answers shoud go to the garbage now.
you are saying you never lost to a defender and immediately switched to a faster setup?
you never lost to a better player with slower setup and immediately changed to a slower setup?
you should be ashamed of yourselves!!!

Seriously speaking, when I play tournaments I only care whether my opponent has junk rubber(s) on the racket or not. I never ever remember paying attention to the blade or the specific kind of rubber my opponent used. I'm only aware of what my friends use because I see their rackets a lot of times.

Sure, kowabunga, sure. It explains why you use fake blades but the rest of us surely have brains situated where they are supposed to be.

Even though I kind of know why, I've always wondered why people are so obsessed with equipment.
I would say that a majority of the threads here are about equipment.

I've always been a person who has said "skill over equipment."

If you lose to someone, get better. Refine your skill set or learn some new ones.

Just practice. If you can't practice, then it's quite simple: you won't really improve.

I'm aware that a lot of people don't have the time to practice, because life is full of things to do.
However, what makes you think that new equipment will change your game? (Except the transition to/from junk rubber).

If you are a really busy person and can't practice often, just be an adult and accept the fact that ping pong isn't your life and that you aren't going to quickly improve. I recently got a job, and will be going on to college, so I know for a fact that I won't be becoming a 2400 player anytime soon. You won't be defeating your rivals anytime soon. You have more important things in life to do.

If you like trying out new equipment, then good for you. However, just know that new equipment isn't going to help you jump to higher levels. Practice does that. Nothing can replace practice.
Get rid of the notion that new equipment will allow you to beat different people.

Using new equipment is like using a different car: using better cars isn't going to make you a better driver.

If you want more thoughts on whether or not using different equipment will make you improve, think about this:

Will using different equipment change what decisions you make during your game?
If an equipment increased the quality of one kind of shot, don't you think it would negatively affect other kinds of shots? (There is always a trade-off)

One trap is shot selection.

Many ways to fall into a trap there.

Most frequent ones are strongly attacking the wrong ball, blocking passively when you should be countering or at least punching, and maybe failing to setup and try your best shots at the end of a close that got you a lead.

if you read this thread, you can ignore every message other than the first one and this one.
this thread is not looking for advice or coaching or zen words.
it's for people sharing experiences of thoughts of changing equipment after losing to this or that player.
