To generate revenue from selling regular off-the-shelf rackets. No top player uses rackets available in retail stores. I mean, does anyone seriously believe that professionals play with the same rackets we ordinary mortals can buy? That’s their livelihood.
By the way, it’s the same situation in tennis. The rackets available on the market have nothing to do with the ones used by Federer, Nadal, Novak, Sinner, Alcaraz… It’s just a paint job — and in table tennis, it's basically a handle glued onto one of who-knows-how many test rackets (often 40 or more) that the player liked.
I do,.. blades are expensive for a reason it’s just that pros have the luxury of going through a lot of them in a short period of time once they feel they’ve absorbed too much sweat and that they can choose all of them with the exact same weight they want whenever they ask.. coming to the second topic of pros switching handles to hide that they aren’t using a blade from their sponsor that does happen but the question then comes if someone like let’s say allegedly anders lind is playing with a disguised boll alc , doesn’t that prove that he’s using butterfly blades which anyone could buy since he’s not sponsored by bty and he’s not going to have a “customized “ bty blade for himself

One could argue that he is getting the non-sponsor blades through a teammate or a national team contract. Just playing devil's advocate.

Very funny. I am going tell this story to my children.

Different from what? Still looks like a Xylo 7 to me....
thanks I don't know much about Joola since they are not widely popular in my area. If that was true I gues no-carbon blades suite Hugo better because that match he played splendidly

I am naive enough to believe a version of it. Blades are only one part of the racket process in table tennis and I have no problem believing that blades that some top pros use are pretty similar to what you can buy in the store, only with a spec sheet of preferences that a specific pro might desire. Whether this spec sheet contains characteristics that would affect whether that blade would be sold commercially (weight that people wouldn't buy etc.) is a separate issue. But I used to play with pretty heavy blades so I know that it was possible to find a few. But I am not a fan of heavy blades now and I suspect most people who don't spend their lives playing TT aren't. But I am also confident if there was a reasonable market for such, they would be available. But like oversized (size 15+) playing shoes, they are not commercially available for that reason.

Even in tennis, strings are often pretty important as well as the tension to which the racket is wired. In table tennis, rubbers are usually more important and are often boosted. Given how frequently some pros change blades/rubbers with modern water based gluing etc., it would be interesting if they were wedded to using things that could not come out of a reasonable production process.
yes I also believe so, it does not make sense to me if they spent hours to create a great blade and sell a different one to the market. The customization for the pro here, in a sense that the weight and shape of the handle can be modified. Or people think their blades are made from some super rare expensive wood from Africa..

He has played all wood this whole event. Matt gave his theory (Vitor Ishiy uses the blade so Hugo probably tried it, felt it worked and then got whatever he could to play with from Joola). It will be interesting if it sticks to have a top player playing with Wood again. But it is also obvious how much of an outlier Hugo is in power.

Ok so ask yourself this then. If revenue generation was the goal why on earth would any brand custom handle a blade with an all wood $90 blade handle? If it was anything other than a $90 all wood blade why would Joola not put a $260 Trinity handle on it to promote its most expensive blade to generate the most revenue? Your logic is fundamentally flawed based on this example. It’s a commercial Xylo 7, the exact same blade that was available on the shelves. How do I know? Because I was asked urgently to try and find any inventory of it in the US so we could send some for him.

As I keep saying you guys don’t have to trust me but I’m not just making stuff up here 🤣

Sad. I thought you guys were changing the handle of Calderano's blade to a different Joola product every match to help the sales of less popular blades, while making Hugo look like a superhuman who can play at the same level with anything.

that's literally true.. Matt said the Xylo7 was "urgently" shipped to Hugo so he could get used to it fast to defeat Simon

I have followed this thread now for some weeks and I still do not understand why some people do no want to believe that a pro would be able to play with a "normal" (selected) Joola blade.

In the last years I have tested several Joola blades and some of them are really top in my eyes. For example the Rossi Emotion is an all time classic blade - an Innerfiber blade with hinoki outer layer. The Vyzaryz series is also fantastic. Personally I like the Trinity most. And the ZQ90 is also a brilliant blade. So why should Joola not be able to organise a top blade for Hugo Calderano?

By the way: Joola rubbers are also competitive, especially the Dynaryz series, Tronix and Rhyzen also for beginners and most amateur players. But in this point I am also not sure. if Calderano would be happy with the actual Joola rubbers. If he wants to choose, he can choose between Dynaryz ZGX and .... ZGX ;-) But as there is already a new rubber in the larc for him, everything should be fine.

Hugo used it from the start of this event. So he probably started using it closer to after he lost his first match at Champions. He probably didnt feel comfortable against Dima and switched to this. But very likely the search will go on for a while.

1. If Hugo needs another one I can provide him with my spare one (for just 500$ ).. It has some chips here and there, but overall it is in great condition.
2. On a serious note: is there some rule of thumb about how long is the life of the product? Like after 4 years, if it's not a super best seller, we discontinue it? Or it's different from product to product? Do you have knowledge about this and can you share it?

It doesn’t need to be a super best seller, it usually just needs to sell 😂 typically low sellers or changes in product lines are the main reasons for discontinuations.

Well, ML created his 56-match win streak after WTTC 2011 using his DHS prototype 506 (a 7-ply that looks like PG7) but with PG3 handle (a blade that cost US$25 in Hong Kong and much less in Chinese mainland).

Needless to say, the sales of PG3/PG7 went through the roof. As with all things, low-end models are actually the money makers.

Perhaps they did in China where DHS is established more in the market. Regardless, it’s a Xylo 7 😅
