changing clubs

I didn't improve a lot in that club.
When I left I was in the same division as when I arrived to the club.
Also I barely trained, mostly just once a week.

If you improved, the old club can ask. The system in your country seems to be just like in France. Of course it won't be astronomical amounts.
THe maxium amounts I saw in my club was for a very good player (one of my closest friends), not pro, my club was his 1st club, he reached the great ranking of number 867 in France, when he left the fee was about 500 euros. He came back to my club after a couple of years, was ranked number 404, my club had to pay 600 euros to get him back :D

Absolutely not a pro, the fee is based on the age, the ranking variation.....many things.

It's not exactly the same.
Here the amount is not related to whether you improved or not.
It's related to the division you are in.
Each division has a max amount.
So if you are going to ask for money, you ask the max.

Also "improved" is a very vague concept.
Of course the trainer will always say the player improved a lot.
In my case my ranking barely changed during the period in this club so there's nothing that says "oh yeah he improved a lot, we should ask money".

The idea that the club feels it has some sort of ownership of the player seems totally off base to me. If they were training you, not charging you, but paying you, then it would be different. But you paid for the use of the club. Why do they think they have any kind of ownership of the players.

Yes that's what I thought when this situation came up.
It's kind of how pros are treated.
We all heard of football players who spent 6 months, a year in the bench because the coach didn't want them and nobody would buy the pass.
In my case if the new club didn't want to pay a cent I would have stayed in the old one forced to play for them.
I think there's another situation in which you become a "free agent" but if you fall here you can't play for any club for a year.
