On January 4th, Chines women's team held first stage of "Road to Tokyo" Trials to select the remaining 7 players for the second stage.
The participating 16 players in the first stage were divided into four groups as follows:
Group A: Feng Yalan, Sheng Dandan, Zhang Qiang, Li Jiayi
Group B: Mu Zi, Che Xiaoxi, Jiang Yue, Liu Fei
Group C: Li Xiaodan, Liu Xi, Gu Yuting, Hu Limei
Group D: Zhao Yan, Gu Ruochen, Liu Yaoyang, Zhou Xintong
Note: originally, Guo Yue was scheduled to play in Group A. However, a day before the trials began, Guo Yue withdrew from the competition telling the coaching team that she did not feel well and did not want to participate in the competition. Eventually, Li Jiayi replaced Guo Yue's place in Group A. That means Guo Yue will not participate in Tokyo's World Team's Championships because the coaching team has made it very clear from the beginning that all players have to participate in the trials in order to be considered for one of the five spots.
First, the four groups played Round Robin, and the winners of each group gained direct entrance into the second stage.
The winners of each group are:
Group A: Zhang Qiang
Group B: Mu Zi
Group C: Hu Limei
Group D: Liu Gaoyang
Then the second place in each group had a head-on PK, and the winners also gained entrance into the second stage:
Feng Yalan won over Zhou Xintong
Liu Xi won over Liu Fei
The final and the seventh spot for the second stage went to Zhou Xintong, who won over Liu Fei in the final match.
The above 7 players will join the other 7 players that are automatically qualified for the second stage based on their top ten world ranking as well as performances in World Tours in 2013.
The confirmed 14 players for the second stage:

3. Liu Shiwen
4. Wu Yang
5. Chen Meng
6. Zhu Yuling
7. Wen Jia
8. Zhang Qiang
9. Mu Zi

Note: Wen Jia autamatically qualified for the second stage due to her winning women's single's champion in 2013 German Open.
The second stage will be played out in Round Robin system. However, the dates for the second stage trials have not been decided. The coaching team is also still contemplating out of five spots how many should be decided through the second stage trials.
