Here's my ten cents. Personally I won't coach players from my own club against each other, even if they aren't my students. It's just a moral rule that some coaches have and others don't. I think if a player is playing another player from their club then they should bring up the issue of coaches before the match.

I like to treat all my students equally whether they are new with me or longer term. It also presents an opportunity for them to play matches without a coach and learn some lessons by themselves.

Lots of differing opinions but there is mine to add in the mix :)

The structure of your club is hierarchical and quite different. I would be interested in whether you would do the same if you and another coach were competing for students and both had students in the final match of an event at another club.

That's a good point. In New Zealand we have regional associations and players represent their region. Each main region has a purpose built table tennis stadium. When I coached in New Zealand I never coached against other players from my region. If the players both agreed before the match to have coaches then I would coach. I feel like it's something that needs to be discussed before a match. If the opposition player had no coach and both players were from my club then no I wouldn't coach.

I have a different scenario for Matt:

@ Matt: here's the scenario:

One of the kids you coach is, say he's just broken 2000 but he has the potential to be a much higher level player. His father approaches you and says: "I'm taking my son to US Nationals to compete in a few events. I'd like to bring you along so you can coach him in his matches at the event. What do think a reasonable fee for that would be and would you do that for us? My kid really likes your coaching and feels connected with you as his coach.

1) Would you say: "No, I don't do that kind of thing."

2) Would you accept?

3) Would you accept and explain that, if the condition arose that the kid was playing another player you also happen to coach, that you won't coach that match?

4) If you chose #3 and the father said he would just use a different coach if that was the case, how would you feel about that?

I would choose number 3.

As always in the USA the parents will make whatever decision they think is right for their kid, regardless of what your opinion is and whether or not you are doing a good job with their kid. How would I feel? By now...I would just accept it.
