Regarding Jeff's finger...I am a penholder and for some years had a sore contact point on my forefinger, not exactly the same as yours, but I believe a slight change in grip will do much for you. Your grip seems tightly "choked" against the actual blade. For me when I loosened my grip slightly to point the angle of the bat more away from me rather than down, it served to move me slightly up the handle and "voila" no more sore contact point. Interestingly, it made my forehand stroke more dangerous too!

Hello Flatstyk:

First welcome to TTD!

2nd, have you seen this thread yet?

Just curious how many Penholders are on TTD?

Thanks Carl! That is hard to accept all of a sudden, but if that is the case, I will do what it takes for it to heal.
Maybe I will take the time to learn shakehand then :)

Thanks for shedding light on this matter for me. I have asked multiple people and none has been able to pinpoint it as clearly as you.

I banged my body up pretty badly back when I rode ramps on skates. From slamming my shins into hand rails my shins used to look crazy. If it is on the long part of a bone, it is not as big a deal. When it is in the joint, it is a little more of an issue. And yours is right in the joint.

Hopefully it will heal quicker than what I said. But it is worth not aggravating it. It will get better. And a few months learning shakehand really could help your penhold game.

And, when you are better it will give you a fun way to play OldSchool. When you beat him shakehand, he can't ask you for points. Even though I predict he will try. [emoji2]

OSPH, thanks for the welcome. I have been a lurker for quite some time, just enjoying reading and learning (hopefully.) I am more senior than most posters here, but have been playing regularly for about the last 5-6 years, a minimum of 10 hours a week and sometimes double that...which translates to sometimes every day. Once a week I drive one hour to play with an area club. Thankfully, although we are in a non-tournament area of the country I have found a couple of regular practice partners and some other nearby addicts to keep it going! I am not sure where my rated level would be. Once in awhile I can get a game or two off 1800 level players but my usual level is one or two below that. I play mostly TPB but have recently begun incorporating RPB as a variation into some serve returns, some wide backhand and some shots where my slow mind has time to convert to hopefully surprise my opponent!

I suggest you do a test. Get a few of your friends to wear a white shirt when you play then. See if it affects your play at all.

Sometimes, friends won't complain about something like that even if it bothers them. But if someone changing the score in their favor or calling a ball that was out an edge ball in their favor or the other way against you ever gets under your skin a little, you could be trying the patience of your friends without even realizing it.

I've played a lot of players wearing a white shirt and it won't affect in any way the game.
But OK, thanks for the feedback

So it's against the rules because someone just had a silly idea at the ITTF. Shame on them!

Jeff, I am going to go straight to the issue: You bruised the bone in the actual joint. That is NOT A CALLUS. The swelling, the bump, is what the bone does when it gets banged enough in that area right at the joint.

The good news is that it will go away. The bad news is, it will take several more months. Could be 6 to 12 months depending on how badly you irritated the area.

While the bump is like that, even if it feels better, continued banging of that very small area will make it worse fairly quickly. And as you repeat it, until the bump is gone, it will get worse than before, each new time you aggravate it.

The sanding of the edge information was correct. But the degree of sanding is what you may be missing.

Where your finger is on the FH side of the blade, you need to sand that down almost all the way to the Carbon on the BH side of your blade so that your index finger is on a completely flat surface that is the same angle as the angle of your index finger in your photo.

That will help AFTER THE BONE HAS HEALED. However, for the next 6 months, my recommendation is to get a shakehand blade and learn to play shakehand for a while. Doing that will ultimately help your penhold game improve anyway. But that will allow you to play and it risk making the injury worse.

Otherwise my recommendation would be, don't play for 3-9 months (until the bump is FULLY GONE).

As of now, the injury is not serious. But if you keep re-aggravating the injury, at some point it will be.

Excellent, Carl.

Or he could also try use his other hand. Would be good in many ways.

Hey guys how are you all?

I had quiet a lot going on recently not only in tt life.

Well but as i don't want to bore you with m work stories I am going to talk about the tt stuff.

Last Sunday I played at the MTTV tournament which is the biggest tournament in the area. I got up at ****ing 7 AM to get there. And i have to say for me table tennis is not a morning sport. So i played the E-Tournament. its the lowest rated tournament you can enter in switzerland. The ratings go from zero to about 1600 ish.
I actually was the second seed and got a walkover in the first round. Which led to me being cold in the second round.

I then played against an older gent in the second round and lost 0:3.. i played terribly. I actually recorded that match. But i don't want to show it. My first loss against a lower ranked player this season. I was pretty down at that point. Even more as he lost in the next round to a very weak player. That weak player actually got to the finals, beating another friend of mine who should have won easily.

The second series would start at 1:30 PM... so i had enough time to watch some of the A series matches and having some fun matches myself. It actually put me in a better mood.

Then the second series started. Its the D series Players rated zero to 1800ish can compete there. In my first match i played against a lower rated junior who i put with cowardly plays of mine. Only pushes and service points.

MY second opponent was a much higher rated player who looped really hard. It was so much fun to play him. I went up in the first game to lose the next three very closely contested. I was very happy with my performance in that match as i used my backhand to open up. And he blocked them long lots of times. Also i got in some really cool counter topspins.

You guess it, i did not record that match ...:D :D shit
That's it from the tournament.

Next tt event was today. I played league matches in the 4. division.

The opponents were all ranked lower but had tricky play styles. I was interested how i would perform against them, as i played them 10 months ago.

Once again i played terrible. No topspins with whip action. it felt like i was pushing the ball over the net in my topspin strokes. It felt like i was using only my shoulder to hit... what an ugly feeling. Good choice i did not record it :p

I won all matches with 3:0, 3;0 and 3;1 .. still i felt really bad after the matches as i won playing very bad :(

One little thing i was kinda content with was how i handled the well placed pushes of one of them. He pushed into everything , even my short topspin serves... hmm maybe i should have tried long topspin serves...

His specialty was pushing very wide, he set up a push into the backhand to then push it very wide into the forehand. If managed to do a crossover step and hit it he would block it into my backhand.

Ten months before i had grave problems against this tactics. This time i managed to get in at least a little body rotation into the stroke which made him stop playing this tactics.

Oh and yesterday i almost broke my bat, as a bystander walked into me doing topspins drills... as a consequence my nittakkus h3 topsheet started to peel off -.- also the blade has a big nick now.
He was like ohhhh and shook my hand as he proceeded to just walk away. With my standing there all dazzled. I was quiet pissed off -.-

Thanks guys for the support through this difficult phase of accepting the reality. It really helps give me a more positive outlook on this matter, and prevent depression for me haha.

I think I will probably try shakehand first before I switch to using my other hand :p
OSP should be happy :D

On a side note, a 2:1 like ratio reached not by video but by injury... never would have thought of it.

Older doesn't necessarily mean dead! :) I will post a video one of these days...and then you will see older in motion, if not real action!

I can't wait the tournament on this Friday, because i am just a troll i signed for a Class C level which is for beginners, i know i won't win it, i will try hard to qualify to quarter and semi finals at most, the coach told me that i will be strong in that class, but have a feeling that he may include some of higher classes in this class just to keep balance, if they are all beginners in class C then i can win until the end, but i don't think this gonna happen if not all are beginners.

And during the time, i am trying to practice with my robot more, still not getting full understanding, but i managed to have something with it, it will take time, but the big nightmare is i don't have a catch/collecting net for backside of the robot to collect the balls, so that i try not practice much until i order the net.

Today i will try to play few games with very good skilled players, i know i will lose but i will fight and try to win some games, this will give me more confidence to face lower level players if it will be honest level, i won't call myself a high level so definitely not class A, but Class B is my true level, but i paid and i wanted to enjoy more games rather than playing 2 or 3 games and out, i drive far so i will choose a lower class to go further then another time in future i will join higher classes when i am ready.

Last few days i played with my rackets that has pips out, sounds it gave me more control and win over the inverted ones, because i depends on speed and very sensitive for spins so i can't focus, while with those pips i mostly control and put my strategies on the play, and i felt the opponents having a hard time winning over me rather than when i am using fast inverted rackets, and the coach asked me why i use this LP racket, i told him simply to make difficult games to my opponents, and i am practicing so one day i can use my inverted rubbers blade better way, speed and smashes didn't work in many games, i win 3 smashes or 2 BH shots and lose all the rest, so overall it is not the way to win, after all i think to win wisely more than to win strongly with speed and loops and it won't work for me, and very strange he asking me this question when i see some players in class A[High class] using pips too, very strange.

My backspin serve is now heavy enough that on the club floor, I can double bounce it short and if it comes off the table after that, it still has enough spin to come back to where I am standing. I did it three times in a row. Now I know I am getting to the point where it is no longer an accident.

I got the Nexy blades today. I assume that Kanaph is the thicker blade (didn't read the labels) so I will use that first. It currently has MX-P on it so I may have to remove that and put on the Karis M as I don't do Evolution anymore.

I really have to set us myself to practice my loop against backspin with my new setups as I am having problems with weird balls with slower blades.

About warm-up body i know that, actually i do that while i am sleeping, hahaha, i too much moving in my bed while sleeping and many times i squeeze my body to myself like worms, but i will think about those warming up things.

This sport or game made me to think about sports more, i am starting to do some exercises to keep my body fit, i am already fit but the laziness made me feeling heavy, so i hope the exercises will do the job nicely sooner and later.

The one with the dark burned core is Kanaph. I also wrote the name of the blade on the tag hanging from the case. Red case one should be Hanibal.

Thanks - figured it out. I had them the wrong way round. Have taken the MX-P off the Hannibal and it is the one I am currently leaning towards though it is quite possible that I haven't given the Kanaph a real chance.
