I drove $300 hoopties for the first 20 years of my career and never bought a new car until age 40... and that was for wife. Savings can be done and it takes time for most people. (My first car was a rolling Molotov Cocktail -no gas cap, stuffed a plastic bag in there)

You have some time.
lol yeah my plan is to buy a 15 year old well-maintained honda/toyota with cash. Kinda ruins my hopes of a "free" trip to europe though but definitely makes the down payment and powerpong omega more realistic.

I do not think I got my first Volvo from the factory until I was near age 50.

My whole life since 21, my wife always nagged me that her Captain and Major wives got new Volvos every few years.

Haha, she knew we made like 1000 usd a month and that was out of reach, but it didn't stop her from mentioning this every 2 days.

30 years later, we got a Volvo, hard work and savings add up. You have time. We got ours before we were too old to enjoy it, but did not buy until we could afford it.

So I wrote about this adult learner earlier in the thread (he is around 2400 USATT now) - he just got semi-finals at O30 and finalist at O40 at the US Nationals. Here is the finals match of the O40 and the semi-finals match from the 040 as well.

3 hours before a club?
In 3 hours you can drive everywhere in my country and join 155 clubs :).
We have almost in every little town a club. In bigger city's even more than one.

I have family in Australia that came for a visit. They where surprised how close everything is :D.
I'm jealous. Most of the clubs in my area are so far apart and only open 2-3 days a week.

I need to move haha.

YES.

I made a thread about this as my wife and daughter wanted to get some foodie action in Copenhagen (just a few hrs drive from the Volvo Factory) and I wanted to get some TT action.

SO... WHAT did Der_Echte do??? I made a thread asking for TTD members in Copenhagen to ID themselves for sum TT adventure. It was a resounding success.

Good news on your professional career.

Man that is awesome. I read the thread lol. The pictures you loaded aren't there anymore. Can you reload them here? I'm always interested in seeing other TT facilities.

Damn I haven't played in 2 weeks due to a work conference and am itching a bit :( The only thing I did was a lot of the recovery reset shadow practice, it would be interesting to see if I can incorporate it when I play tomorrow!

Just came back from my capital Kuala Lumpur after participating in one of the biggest amateur only TT tourney.

Will write more about it tomorrow after I take my nap. Been awake since 5.00am this morning and it is 10.30pm now. It has been a very long day. Good night all.

Played this week. Lost for the first time to someone. All the three games I lost were the minimum 2 point margin. I blew him out in the games I won. But he has really wanted this win for a while so I am sure I made his day. And he is a good guy, but I just like to make people wait longer for that win lol. That said, I need to put more sharpness on the first four shots into my game. I think the protocol should be well defined.

Long serves - loop or toppspin.
Short serves - flick to create angle with high probability of ball returning to me. Push as a alternative. Focus on getting into the topspins rally
Primary serving strategy - short forehand with sidespin depending on opponent's return weaknesses. Long backhand as a variation.
Third ball and Serve - work much harder on serve length and understanding the weaknesses of short serves that are not tight.

Technique - work much harder on training fast, low trajectory topspins as consistent shots. Especially on third and fourth ball. I do okay on 5th ball but I get opponents too comfortable knowing they will get spin on the third ball almost all the time.

Placement: expand options and work on reducing predictability. Get the topspins deeper and wider. Attack the middle much much more (might be too late bit I have ro try).

The main thing now is to go into a period of extensive practice. Probably beginning next month

Played today and didn't do as bad as I thought I would. But still somehow the spin feeling in both my FH and BH loops is a lot worse compared to 2 weeks ago for some reason. Thanks to a lot of the footwork training I've been doing, I was in position a lot of time even in a lot of wide angle short game battles but still spin reading and spin generation is a huge thing that is missing. It's weird and hard to quantify but the touch and timing is just not there. I was missing a lot more serve receives than I really should at this level. Still won a few games against two of the highest level players in my group (the LP/inverted penholders and the double inverted Chinese guy who had a few years of formal training before and won some tournaments).

I'm thinking if it's worthwhile to add the reverse pendulum to my serve arsenal, I got some compliments about it's deadliness but I feel that my serves are already complex enough (pendulum, heavy under/nospin, two versions of hook serves + occasional tomahawk)

Give a short try at loosening the hand grip pressure, shortening the swing, and letting the ball come to you a tiny moar.

Had a 2.5-3.5 hr playing session yesterday. Got a lot of tips from better players around me and I did some intense drilling for one hour. Mainly movement and correcting a lot of my FH and BH strokes. Getting coaching really helps. Being tall and trying to stay low for practice was exhausting and my back and arm are incredibly sore.

My wrist seems to bend backwards when attempting my strokes, like my wrist automatically became a windshield wiper. I later figured out that I was gripping the paddle way too tightly and loosening it definitely helped the power I was getting. Explains why my forearm is insanely sore.

My stroke and focus on training close to the table made me realize how ill-equipped I am from mid to long range as I miss like over 30% of shots from that range. Going to drill this a lot tonight. Probably another 2 hour session and I'll completely pass out tonight haha.

I'm also extremely jealous of those that can squat down low and attempt a spinny forehand loop. I misread it and keep my paddle a little higher and the ball just bites down. I'll get used to this.

While it has limitations as a tool, try to use your swing trajectory as a guide for the ball. In broad terms, the shape of your stroke should guide the ball and also be used to adjust to the incoming spin.

As an upright player, I can speak about the value of being upright vs getting lower. The main value is being able to start below the ball for most strokes in order to get decent topspin. Because I have long arms, I can get away with being a bit more upright than I should be. However, nothing in life is free - when you are lower, your swing trajectories can have a more natural forward component than they would when you are upright, where more of your momentum will be upwards. That said, you can compensate for the swing planes. But you have to be aware of the tradeoffs because even as upright as I usually play, I sometimes have to get lower for service return and third balls against a certain kind/level of player as I can't generate the quality I need to against their ball trajectories or spin quality without it.

The benefits of being low noted, I point this out because I see many players beating themselves up over playing upright, but not realizing that a lot of it can be compensated by adjusting your swing trajectory if you have the right mindset. And to me, many people who start learning later, especially with some of the issues you can get trying to stay low, should just learn to compensate with reasonable swing trajectories so that they don't find playing table tennis too painful. But to each his own, just need to help people be aware that you can play decent table tennis without being low all the time, though there are limits on what you can do with low balls when you are not low relative to the table.
