LOLOLOL at Liten and japanese carpenter comment

My first time hearing me described that way! And although I've not thought of it that way, i have to agree... basically, go with the flow or as a martial arts master says, 'Flow with the go.' :) (Rickson Gracie for the record)

Osph: only for you!

Wow at your opponent! Given this was League play, guessing he did this cos his team won already? If not, what would his teammates think of him?
This is an individual league. I think he was trying to practice vs my attacks or other things. This guy is 2300 level and can defeat me 3 to 0 and I never get more than 6 points if it is a real tourney.

He did 3 games and had to leave, he was there for practice. Dude is a 2300 warrior. There is no way he was in game mode.

So I have a couple problems that are bothering me more lately.

1. I graze the ball too finely, I don't do my loops as "gumming" as often as I should so I often lack power. But that's not the primary problem with the grazing of the ball. Dust collects and the grazing stops working, I think it's my stroke and I work on fixing it and my actual solution to fixing it is doing a loop that's described as "gumming".

Now I know that my topsheet is getting dusty because I have a test for the topsheet. I lightly press a ball to the rubber and slide it. If it slides, that's a no-go. If it holds tight, I'm kosher.

2. I clean my rubber WAYYYY too much. I feel I have to clean it so often because if I don't I can slide the ball on my rubber too easily. It's not in my head I've had other's test it on my rubber too and they notice a significant difference. What makes me sad though, is that I'm surely destroying my rubber cleaning it so much. :(

Went to D.C. last weekend and played in the league event Friday night at Smash T.T.until 11pm where I got my ass beat. I did manage to meet Der Echte and got some tips about my play problems. I do not have video but because Der Echte has now seen me play several matches he can now speak intelligently about my many problems. As a side note for all you folks that live there,I am envious of your strong league and tournament player bases but your traffic sucks... Saturday and Sunday I played in the WDCCT Open and again got my ass beat. I started out ok as I had a 200 point higher player down 9-3 but then let I let him come to beat me. Consistently throughout the day I was missing my 3rd ball attacks and high dead balls. I either completely missed the ball, hit it off the edge of my racquet or into the net. This is not something I usually do. The last time I had this problem was in Vegas playing with the Butterfly ball and again, this time,we were using the Butterfly ball. In the future I must practice the prior week with this ball rather than the Nittaku ball. I did enjoy the D.C. area and I met a lot of nice people with Der Echte at the top of the list, but I wish I had not played so embarrassingly.

Been away from the game so long as you know, what is 'individual league'? From the "League" that I know, it was 11 games - 9 singles and 2 doubles... and if 1 team has secured 6 victories already, they would send their weaker players in to get the experience or have the A Team play less than their level, like you think of your opponent - working certain aspects of the game, as the League matches i was in, did not count towards one's ustta's rating.

This is an individual league. I think he was trying to practice vs my attacks or other things. This guy is 2300 level and can defeat me 3 to 0 and I never get more than 6 points if it is a real tourney.

Went with wife to view a house. Finished early enough. Got to the club 6pm. Jam-packed.

Played T. He's a defensive player who once in a blue moon will attack (probably depends on his partner). Can play PH or SH. As PH, he doesn't attack. Not sure why he play PH at all. With most, he will play PH. With me, he switches to SH. Not sure if that's a compliment or not.

I'm not an arrogant person (unless it's with 42andbackpains and our old crew :), so please don't take this the wrong way. Wins and losses mean nothing to me, but it's a gauge for me of my 'unretirement' and my progress on my 'comeback'. Ultimately, I'm old, need exercise, need to lose some weight, why not do something I love to do? And while I'm spending so much of my time on it (we are all going to die sooner or later, it's a fact of Life), so why not try to improve my Game?

In that vein, I post about my games and scores (as best as I remember) as a marker. I played T, 2x before. Lost both times, first time 3-1 and 2nd 3-2. This was sometime ago with my old favorite racket but with a fast rubber I couldn't get used to. Last night, I lost 3-1. I was moving him side to side, and 3rd to 7th ball, I would go into HULK SMASH mode.

Most games I lost at 7 and the game i won was at deuce. He didn't eat my serves, so no freebies. He generally serves nospin. He is a slow and steady player, will return most balls, will try to move his partner side to side.

Again, not to sound arrogant ... my game should beat his game. I am my own worst enemy. I was maybe 50/50 on my attacks. So i cannot blame it on the rubber or the blade as half my attacks made it. Made some loops, made some smashes, made some punches. I have to be more consistent. Sadly, forgot my Joby (magnetic tripod) so no video of the match. Frustrating to be in the driver's seat and moving him side to side, clearly controlling him. And I pick my spot to attack and go 50/50.

(begins sarcasm) A rambling digression ... how rare from me (/sarcasm)

'si jeh' (term of respect from chinese martial arts to signify an older woman than oneself who joined before one ... basically means martial sister... iirc japanese martial arts only uses sempai/kohai (junior/senior) and doesn't distinguish for gender. Chinese culture distinguishes between gender as well as relative age compared to oneself (of when they joined the school and not physical age).

A si-jeh was watching me play partly. After the match, she asked if i won or lost. i said i lost in 4. She said, "What?!?!?!" you are clearly more skilled than him!" And I explained to her that I've not got my timing/rhythm/consistency back yet, despite 1 year of play but after a 30 yrs absence.

REFLECTION

No real excuse, am mostly used to Avalox by now, my former backup but now primary blade. Used to the DHS H3 rubber for the most part. What sometimes loses me points is the manipulating/transitioning of the blade from FH to BH side. I play with smooth rubber, but my primary tactics are PH pips, as I started 'officially learning' the game as ph pips. So for me, the transitioning from side to side in grip changes is key. Unlike my old blades grooved handle, I cannot sand/file down Avalox's handle any more without negatively impacting structural integrity of the blade/handle. Glad T didn't eat my serves for freebies as that forced me to up my game more.

She commented that I seemed to rush my shots... which is totally legit. Although I was in the driver's seat, and T will rarely attack me, i beat myself by rushing my shots. Too bad i didn't video the match but I thanked her for her feedback.

----------------

Played K next. As a reminder to TTD CCers, he's become one of my arch-nemesis LOL. He's a defensive SH who will attack periodically. Wicked sidespin FH loop... and BH smash. So like T, he's defensive, but unlike T, K has some attacks.

Posted a video a few pages back of a 3-1 loss which is indicative of my play vs him (and apparently vs others) ... lost 3 straight to K... again, some punches were for winners, some HULK SMASH modes were for winners, some loops (didn't attempt many though against K) were for winners. The same tactics/strokes were also losers. Frustrating to say the least LOL at me.

Had in mind NextLevel's advice to serve short ... worked a bit! Lost 3 straight, mostly at 7! That's an improvement over last week's under 5 showing, although, none of my shots found the table last week despite my magic inscription of "never miss" in chinese characters LOLOLOL

REFLECTION

Again the transitions of grip from FH to BH is what i think is happening to me. May be psychological though as my old favorite blade, "Excalibur", has a broken handle. This may be hard to see on video, but as I play i can "feel" it.

My lack of consistent play is haunting me. At times, we see me in my old form of 30 yrs ago. I'm controlling the point, punching down the line for winners, moving side to side to HULK SMASH mode for winners, etc.

--------------

Played V. next. My first time with him. Slightly lower-level player than me. Was ok with just practicing and blocking for him to work his loop and other aspects of his game. A player called next... so we played 2 out of 3. Beat him 2 straight, V got about 7 points. Not to take away from V's skills, I didn't play my A game.

Interesting to note: V didn't eat my serves... and i think i know why. Which could be why T didn't eat my serves. However, I was able to work my pendulum serves... fast and wide to his BH and work on my 3rd ball loops or punches down the line.

While cooling down, watched M1 play a defensive SH blocker. M1 is a 2000 player, and the blocker I've not watched him play at all, but sometimes out of the corner of my eye, I see him playing the higher-level players generally. Courtside seat, afforded a view to his steady blocking and he moves his partner side to side also. Doesn't attack much, scores points from steady blocking as well as moving partner all over.

Called it a night after that and wasn't that tired, able to walk the ~2200 steps to home in ~20 mins (instead of ~25 mins) for extra exercise LOL

As always, thank you to the TTDCCers for letting my old man ramble and for reading!

I remain very truly yours in TT,

~osph

Gene is right, traffic here is terrible, the worst in USA easily.

The seamed plastic ball has an inconsistent bounce on slow light spin shots, so timing a smash or powerloop on those can be often an epic fail. You wonder how the heck you missed. Sometimes it is poor position, but a bad bounce when in position is still bad.

You did well, that whole field was stacked. We got in a lot of practice in both big lead and tight match situations. You actually won a lot of those 9-9 practice games.

You have a good few serves that are hard to read and when you impact the ball below table it is hard to read.

Smash ttc league has a few salty players for group 2 level, so don't sweat it.

Hopefully in the future you will get more chances to practice those score scenarios and other drills.

You ought to tell of your adventures on the tool road... I ought mail you some dinner coin for having to go through that.

I had a great run on Day 3 of Unigames today.
We played players from UNSW, they are just absolutely dominating. I think the strongest ones are at national B grade Hong Kong standard. Anyway, I took one set off a player from that uni. Even though, he may not be playing at 100% strength, I was happy because to take a set even if someone goes easy at that level, it basically means you have to make attacks that aren't weak and they have to land. After that set, I lost 3-1.

In the afternoon, we played against another uni who we played before on Monday, that day we were beaten 9-2. Monday, I lost all 3 of my singles 3-0. Today:
First singles:
Against a guy that is A grade, I was losing 0-2, but I had a teammate who gave me some advice throughout the match. I came back to win 3-2. Scores were all very close. I am so delighted, because this is something no one thought I was able to do.

Second singles:
Against a guy that is (Perth) A grade, better than first one: I took one set off him, and this time I made him work, he cant just treat me like a beginner to win. After I took a set from him, I think he got angry and gave me a 11-0 on 3rd set, but for 4th set, I lost 11-8, as I do not want to be affected by that.

Third singles: Similar level to the second singles guy: I lost first set 11-9, then won second set 13-11, and then won third set as well, then I lost 4th and 5th set. I am happy with that, as I am of course not A grade, but to be playing well and getting sets off them is good enough for me already.

While I played very well, my team didn't do so well. Our best players who are better than me didn't get any wins, so my win became important as it meant we didn't lose 11-0, but rather 10-1 :D

I have taken videos of the games, but unfortunately my phone died in the middle of my 3rd singles. Still I am sure I captured some of my best shots. My RPB was the star today. The sound it makes as I strike the ball, followed by the click as it lands on the other player's side, purely music to my ear!

Congrats on that!
Now what does Grad A and B mean? What kind of rating system do you have in Australia?

Thanks Boogar!

Oh by Grade A I mean, they play in Grade A pennant. This is not national.

By Grade B (the Hong Kong one), I am not sure , it is what my friend told me, as he knows someone at that level back in Hong Kong, and his friend plays that level in the B grade national in HK. And some of the players from UNSW are from Hong Kong, probably that is why he made that comparison.

As for system in Aus, I have no idea, as I don't compete in pennants or nationals or states. Probably can ask DTopSpirit, as he may know more.

Can't find any new videos on your channel.

had to verify some nonsense. Part one of two is up.

Duc is the player in jeans, he always plays in jeans, dunno how, he's mystical. He's between 2000-2050 and he primarily a fisher. I've never beaten him in a full match.
Here's part 1.
