Tennis shoes are a little heavy but able to deal with all the forces that happen in table tennis. However, on an indoor court surface they are not as good as shoes made for indoor court surfaces. And there are some clubs that won't let you use them to play because of the material used for the sole.

However, if they work for you, they should be fine.

I will probably only use TT shoes for when i play at the rec center. The floor there is carpet over cement with zero padding. The clubs I play at have hardwood flooring so it's more forgiving and thin soles don't seem to cause the same stress.

Some make a distinction between "mid foot" and "landing on the ball of the foot". I thought it was common.

You know what I'm talking about, so we're talking about the same thing, really.

However whatever you do, don't run on concrete and don't heel strike barefoot. Do that for 5 minutes and you can feel the abuse. I don't know what'd happen if you did it for a few years.

When I used to run (The leg doesn't make it exactly comfortable or even useful) I ran on dirt roads or grass. With shoes, though.

@Theknife

Aren't TT shoes the thin ones that don't absorb impact as well as some other shoes?

Yes, there was a summer when I had become crazy enough for tennis to buy the famed adidas tennis shoes which last forever. I did land up on tt hall once with those shoes , they are very heavy and they also mark the floor , so not the ideal combination for indoor sports

I'd been looking at videos and other resources earlier today.

I can only find videos that talk about real "mid foot" landing ie: heel and ball at the same time. You mentioned what that is most likely to cause.

That's not what I mean. I didn't see this kind of talk about landing on the heel and ball at the same time, when I picked up my definition. I could only find one video that even mentioned the knee-load that happens when you land on the heel and ball at the same time.

I suppose I'm really just talking about a forefoot landing ie: ball of the foot, but without a dramatic forward lean. Bodyweight mostly above foot when landing.

I'd tell you to go look at Moses Mosop or something, but I'm not actually too sure how applicable running of that caliber is to our running.

My body, especially my shoulder, is the worst it has been in a while. I am going to take an extended break from playing and practicing and see if that helps. I might still do some coaching but if my body acts up, I will put a halt to that too. Will speak to my doctor seriously about it during my next next time we are in the same place, we should play around with some simple movements adapted for your joints.

Stuff like this, but you may not need the breathing and adjusting the movement to a range that works for your body:

Things that might be adjusted: the arms may not reach as far back; the knee or knees may not come as far towards chest; you may not even grab the leg or you may hold the thigh: but not the shin; with the twist you may not go as far; with the bridge you may not lift as high. There are certain movements that could be useful. These are merely examples of the kinds of movements, but may not be the ones best for you.

Anyway, I hope that turns around soon.

If it is the front of the foot and not whole foot landing at the same time, it should be fine.

No no no no, don't land on the whole foot. Some people claim that top athletes do: but they're just full of shit. It's obvious the heel comes after.

However, don't land too far forward either. Trying to avoid the heel striking the ground too much will just cause major shin and calf overuse, and probably injury.

Today i had a 1:1 session with one of my coaches. I am not using him much anymore because i found another coach which is more available and which is nearer to where i live, and although the new one is an ex-pro-JNT player, he is only 1,000 yens more expensive... so...
but i like to play with this guy, who is right handed contrarily to the new one...

He told me I improved a lot in rallies, but currently my main weakness is that I am struggling with the pattern of short game ending by a long push, especially on the FH. And this pattern is very common when battling against stronger players. My footwork in the forward/backward direction is not fast enough, and when i come back, i'm often late and/or too near from the table, hence a lot of misses, especially on the opening FH loop.

He says that i really need to improve a lot on this one in priority. So at least i know what to work on in the next weeks/months

exercise. short serve/stop/stop/stop/long push FH or BH/opening drive to BH/random block to FH or BH etc...
in the 2nd part of the video, there are some good rallies.

if you watched my game against the pips guy that I posted the other day, there was a 32-ball rally ... :)

I've not caught up on posts I've missed since my absence from here. Looking forward to that!

Oops, change TT shoes to tennis shoes. Mild brainfart while typing yesterday...

I've probably been training too much lately, and the final straw was when I went in to reach for a very wide ball and hurt my back.

It will get better in a few days, it's nothing much but enough to discourage me from playing. It's just on time: though. I have a ten day break, starting now.

However that means ten days without table tennis. I might start posting weird things, again.

Worked on my friend's serve and receive, today. He played some low level players while I was away for a few hours, and reportedly he kept whooping ass. They couldn't get his backspin over the net, is what I heard. Just before I left I'd reminded him about whipping on the backswing and waiting until you start to swing, because he could do it somewhat in drills but not at all in games.

His opponents weren't any good, but a week ago he'd not have won. Now he knows how to serve, get a long push and open off that push, so it's a start.

Despite re-newing my rubbers prior to leaving HK, I have not played TT for 18 days now. Coming to think about it, I don't know how I survived it, but then I am also just bearing surviving placement, not used to waking up before 6 lol.

Anyhow, I believe tomorrow I can finally have a hit at the uni club! I scratched off the code on my rubber and put it into the DHS website and it says it is an authentic product and the code has not been entered before. A good start!

I peeled off the plastic cover, and the rubber is so tacky! One of the reason that I wanted to change my old rubber was because the top sheet is not tacky anymore. So this new sheet being so tacky is a reassuring thing. My old rubber was the province version though, so that could be the reason that it isn't as tacky. Nevertheless, I am excited to play tomorrow. I also renewed my backhand rubber, so I will need to do some serious warming up with both sides to get used to them again.

I will bring my tripod in case I feel ready for a match :D

P.S. happy birthday Carl!

Darn it! I thought he really had super duper telepathic powers. My illusions about the wise OldSchoolPenhold have been shattered. I always imagined him as the old guy in the cave with the long beard and the wild eyebrows that everyone in the Kung Fu movies goes to consult so they can get the supernatural Kung Fu skills and defeat the evil guys.
