Ok, here is a condensed version of my April 15th Saturday 2 hours training. I basically train for 2 minutes and rest for 5 minutes...:p I switch back and forth from forehand and backhand drills because i have tendinitis in my upper and lower back shoulder area on my playing arm side. This helps alleviate the strain from doing too many drills on one side of the table. Your opinions and criticisms welcomed :D

This is the week before i played with OSP at our friends basement where he got destroyed....OSP, i couldn't help myself.

0:00 Basic Forehand: Felt some slight slippage from the MX-P. In my opinion why many people feel this rubber is for well defined strokes. I like it because it feels a lot like H3 Neo provincial without the hassle of boosting.

1:32 Forehand Loop practice: Trying to rebuild my forehand loop. More friction and less wood. Didn't do adjustments till 9:14 Forehand Loop drill with multiball.

3:36 Basic Backhand: Its improving weekly. If you didn't know i tried short pips for about 2 years and felt the 2 years was not in vain. Try looping with shortpips on your backhand and you will start to find the feel of the ball even better. It has helped my return to smooth inverted backhand. Just gotta kick the habit of blocking the ball in rallies and spin the ball with my wrist.(Coach reminds me of this habit once in a while)

4:51 Backhand Loop multiball drill: One of my better drills and always had a better backhand loop than my forehand loop since i was a kid. I can feel the ball better on my backhand than my forehand.

5:40 Pendulum Serve to backhand loop drill: Its alright...not there yet.

9:14 Forehand Loop multiball drill: Rebuilding my forehand loop takes time and surely but slowly its coming around. Coach tells me more wrist action and open the face more. As well as rotate around the core of my body, left to right and not lunging to the left when i loop. I have a tendency for my body to spring up and need to stop this habit. I also have a tendency since i was a kid to sidespin loop on my forehand. I am trying to attain a more topspin loop. I am starting to see the dip generated by a well looped ball because i see the dip or arcing of the ball into the table. When i review my recorded video, i feel i am getting good spin when my loops are climbing the barrier after the ball lands on the floor. My old looping style will the ball many a times overshoots the table (too much wood, impact force and driving the ball too much).

13:40 Push Practice: This has helped my touch game a lot in all aspects of my game. Don't understand why more people don't practice this more.

17:45 Forehand Flip drill: Its ok, not good yet. In game i am always late to the ball when i try to flip. My fitness level is not there yet.

18:45 2 Backhand to 2 Forehand Loop drill transition drill: One of my worst drills. Fitness is not there and timing are all off.

19:20 Forehand Loop from half chop drill: Drill to feel the ball more and better my timing. Also one of my worst drills and need to keep at it.

20:10 Match Play: Coach(Ex Beijing provincial player) She gives me 7 and i win 3-0. Then she gives me 6 and i win the first 2 games and lose the last 3 because i was out of steam. (She is also a bit tired from running the Easter week junior camp and this was how i won 5 straight games...lol)

21:04 Point of the Day: Lucky backhand kill for a winner.

42andBP,

Your game has improved a lot and I see that you are a lot more relaxed than I remember. The way to use more wrist or more forearm, health permitting, is to drag the stroke into the ball and let the racket continue moving (snap) after you stop your upper arm and body). So your body should begin coming forward before your arm straightens out fully on the backswing and you should feel as if you are dragging your racket and shoulder into the ball. The one at 19:42, other than the extended pause looked perfect. The ones around 19:58 also looked great. I usually do a more violent stroke, but that also takes it toll on me during matches.

In general, this is great stuff. I could give lots of tips but it would be pointless as your speed and mode of play looks like the kind of stuff you can sustain with the injuries you have. It will get better with time too. Great job.

Although there were reasons ... I'm man enough to admit and acknowledge that I am da suck! The truth shall set me free. Heck, I'm telling TTD that I'm 1200-1400 ... but no one believes me :(

heh heh .... if a 2500+ player gives you 6 points and you win ... hmmm ... ya gotta give me 2 games, and in the 3rd game 10 points AND the serve first!!!!!!

I feel like a kid again when getting praise from Nextlevel. Thank You for the kind remarks and the looping tips. I will try it to implement it tomorrow at my weekly training session. I use to throw my shoulder into my loops, but coach told me this may bad for my shoulders health. But i will still try a safer version for me, less violent action. Thanks again.

LOL.... don't throw the shoulder, throw the elbow. Or if the elbow hurts, don't throw the elbow, throw the wrist. It is all whip motions, you can make them smaller or larger depending on what you decide to throw.

She is 2500 at her peak...now she doesn't train much and gives mostly lessons. I would say she is around 2400 these days. She claims she can play a 2000ish penhold and may challenge her tomorrow...lol

i don't give points unless you bribe me...hee hee

Yeah, i am starting to understand whip mechanics...took me 45 years. I get a lot of whip in my backhand loop and i am try to implement it more in my fh loop. Takes time.

It's obvious in the video, it's obvious in the video. I think if you put the camera on to your old technique, you would see the difference.

So my question now is this - does it make sense when I used to tell you that you were working way too hard??? :D

Well, there is nothing wrong with that if the "1100 player" was a kid who played the last tournament three years ago and then had been coached by a former pro all that time :D

Adult 1600 estimated, plays inverted both sides, beat a 1450 rated double inverted player 6 games under 6 every game. The 1450 had a good 4H loop that would sink after bounce, looked 1800+ to me. I have been coaching 1600 est for 2-3 years. Blocks extremely well on both sides vs inverted rubber. Loops on 4H. Service return well above 1600.

42andbackpains, you play very well, good job ! i think you have a very solid technique overall on both sides FH and BH. I can see only a weakness on the short BH side maybe. Serve and Receive is where you can improve most, especially on the BH receive side. Your short FH stop receive is very good. She's a very good server, but a bit too many mistakes. You seemed tired towards the end, she didn't do much you were making more mistakes.

We couldn't see to much of it but I seem to think you might also experience some problems on choppers with backspin, or on long pushes.

Then its all about physical condition, how much you can move and tactics. Your FH kill is very good, but if the ball comes back even once you seem not ready to get it. Rallies are difficult for you, you score more points on sudden quick attacks.

Thanks for the kind compliments and overall review. I noticed the same thing too in my pushing drills that i am late to my backhand push. I will work on it. My coach was mainly serving side topspin short and side spin short and i was expecting these throughout the match. Then later in the games she started serving side down short to counter my short forehand pushes, i didn't notice it because i was stupid or just out of energy. My bad back stops me from rallying too much and therefore i am weak at rallies. This also has developed lazy feet. I was planning on implementing slow forehand loops while receiving underspin chops/pushes while being moved forehand, middle and backhand....repeating at a very slow pace to get the feel of the ball & drill. Hopefully i can work on rallies and get more touch in my games. Thanks again and i value all your opinions.

It's your reward for not playing the league. More seriously, I should have told you I was coming ao please forgive the oversight on my part. Was only there on Sunday.

Haha, I'm just razzing you!

What league.. WDCTT? Not a member there anymore just an infrequent drop in player. Schedule at work and home has made it impossible to get there much. I'm at NOVAttc more as I have guaranteed practice partners.

If Flatstyk didn't already figure it out, Nuke Skywalker plays at Chantilly and WDCTT. I guess from Arlington, an Uber ride would be cheaper to WDCTT, maybe 15 miles ??

Flatstyk,

Try NVTTC at Madison Rec Center (in Arlington)

Or Gunston Community Center Alexandria. Both close to Arlington...
