It's embarrassing to say this but out of nowhere while messing around, I realized I hold the Cybershape way too strongly when I block and when I return serve. I realized for some reason that it helps me with aggressive serve return on some shots, but in general it is something I need to keep in mind to improve my play with the blade. Need go train a lot with it as well.

Oh, my Mizutani SZLC arrived. But we have a African TT players league on this coming Sunday so I won't tempt myself with it until then lol. Cybershape is going to do fine.

says former JPEN, now CPEN
played a local club tourney today and had the displeasure of playing the DHS 40+ ball (not DJ40+)

the balls just feels weird, too light and i can crack it open in half with just a few well put smashes. cant seem to put any spin on the ball at all.

in the end i couldn't adapt and i lost almost all my matches terribly. luckily it is a team event tourney.

Played in a league event today, first competitive event in almost a year. I arrived just in time, so I went directly into my first match. Everyone I played was in the 1100-1400 range.

Match 1: I played way too tentative and passive in the first game, but ended up tied 1-1. A lot of missing top spin pendulum reads later and I ended up losing 1-3.

Match 2: Played against someone who has his version of the Lebrun lolipop serve. Everything that looked like it was spinning one way went the complete opposite direction. He couldn't return my top spin serves, so we ended up trading serves back and forth for most of the match lol. Had some success with looping by making contact on the side of the ball, but I missed a few critical returns, and ended up losing 1-3. I ended up playing a lot of this match a little bit higher than my normal stance, but in hindsight, I should have just kept low. The serves and the awkward dead ball long pushes made me uncomfortable.

Match 3: I finally adapted after going down 0-1, but I can tell my opponent was playing off. Did one or two long serves and got instantly destroyed for it, so I served short, both side back and side top variations. Deep long pushes and active blocks helped me out a lot when I was out of position. Backhand flicks were on point, but I guess I have to get more comfortable with placing them not directly in the center. I think I won a lot of points off of my reverse pendulum today, which definitely surprised me. Won 3 straight close ones to win 3-1.

Match 4: I used the same strategy as Match 3 with my serve variations. In Matches 3 and 4, I definitely felt like I was getting in position faster after my serve, which won me some points. Ended up winning 3-0.

After tiebreakers, ended up 3rd in my division, with a record of 2-2. Got some great advice on my stance and timing/position tips on my forehand, so I'm going to spend a lot of hours drilling forehand this week.

I did a lot of multiball training today. I really regret not buying this earlier, this is such a huge timesaver! No need to go retrieve balls and bend down to pick them up. And it is so much more time efficient. Even without a partner, having a box of 30 balls means that you can train serves, or flicks / FH receive, BH smashes etc....easily

Even with ppl with much lower level, I could get a lot of practice in (just alternate training).

I did a lot of BH smash training and a huge ton of just FH loop vs block. My pivot FH really sucks at the moment compared to my BH, but I think it's very important to still train that to get the footwork in shape. Can't always just do BH from BH corner.

Time to share my happiness.
After 9 years of loyalty to Hurricane 3 Neo (Commercial + Province), today my racket just went full butterfly.

Addit: the free chack II glue also worked quite well. Although it required 2 layers on the rubber side, the bottle design made it quite easy to apply the glue and it didn't feel like I had to rush to spread the glue (something that I had to with fine zip when the fine zip was not new). I would have to test this glue after a few months to see if it still works nicely.

I can't test out the rubber until Wednesday, but just by throwing the ball onto it to test out the spin, it feels quite grippy.

Can't wait.

So we played the African TT Dallas league today with 7 players. The one player who would have been clear favorite was out of the country (not that he is unbeatable strictly speaking but I haven't beaten him yet and he would have been seeded #1 by rating). As organizer and top seed, I got a bye in the first round. It was a double elimination knockout event. So winners advanced, losers go into a bracket and if you lose in the losers bracket, you are eliminated. The winner of the winners final has the advantage that he has to lose twice to be upset. It's probably a better format if the matches are not on the same day but I just wanted to give people matches while using a reasonable format. Might try something more traditional next time.

So by rating as the #1 seed I got a first round bye. The other players played. I faced a player who was roughly 1850 in the semis. I had played him before and I felt I would be fine if I wasn't missing. I won 3-1, losing the second set at deuce with some good rallies. I missed a high ball that would have won tbe second set but this stuff happens.

I played the first final against a guy who I have played a lot of matches with, a lefty from Ghana. For some reason, he wasn't sharp in the first match and I won 3‐0. To be fair to myself, my new Damien Provost inspired approach to hitting the ball has paid some dividends, even if I probably still need to get some coaching to sharpen my approach.

So with that, I now awaited the results of the losers bracket. Our oldest member had used his crafty all round game with smashing to reach the finals of the losers bracket and he played a tough match with the lefty, whose mind was on the food that we were going to eat after the event (the event we originally pitched using the Chicken dinner angle. But we waived fees other than the club fee and one of the participants was kind enough to bring barbecued chicken and Turkey for the players to eat).

The elderly member went down 2-0, including throwing a 4‐8 lead in game 2. But he came back to won thr next two games. In game 5, he went down 0‐5 and then won the next 4 points. Was it going to be an upset? No, the lefty managed to delay the thoughts of food for a bit and won the game at 11‐6, his powerful forehand handling business.

So the lefty now had to beat me to get a chance at winning it all. It was getting late and some hungry players wanted to just declare me the winner but that was not going to happen. So the lefty and I got down to business.

I went up 2‐0 in games playing some good table tennis. The lefty was trying to block me after sending me wide but my improved movement and compact swinging made it hard to do. So he then realized he need to take a step back and put the ball to my middle more. All of a sudden, I started missing. And he started connecting. It was 2‐2.

The last game didn't have that much drama. I got out to a 5‐0 lead and while there was a comeback attempt, it never really got critical. I had won the first league! Of course, playing fewer matches than my opponent likely helped a little but in the end, the fact that we had the league was the fruition of something we had discussed for a long time. And forget the matches and results, the fact we met up was awesome. Would have been just as great to lose it. The barbecue made up for all and all results lol.

Someone reminded me that about this time last year, I was pretty much retired from TT. Weird to remember that. Now though the next step is to get back to Keto, and find a way to keep the strength and lose some weight. But all step by step. I will post the second finals match when I am done editing away all the filler time.

I am going to tag gozo here @Gozo

Please tell me how D09c plays. I am sticking with Hurricane. I think Hurricane is sticker still and the stickiness will last longer but I am always curious about how D09c plays.

As for Gozo mode, you need Super Viscaria plus 2.5mm of D05 on the forehand side and 2.5mm of T05 Hard on the backhand side. Lol!
