nexy.com has a new blade fitting service where they let you pick the composition of your blade plies (they have 5 woods, and a choice between 3k carbon and an ALC weave) and they build it for you. I won a competition to be a free participant (paying only $40 for shipping) and I got my first prototype which I intend to test today - kiri (or ayous, not sure but more likely kiri), hinoki, ALC, koto. I will give them feedback and get a second. So you get two custom-fit blades for the price of $250. Do check it out. Some posts are on mytt about the service but you can also find information on the nexy website.

EDIT: Added this link to a blog post about the service.

@Tony's Table Tennis ,

Sir, I have question that perplexes me. A veteran player was teaching an asian office lady how to play short pips on BH. Nothing unusual there until...

He says, you should brush more, more brushing...

And red flag started in my mind. Did I miss the memo? I always assume short pips is punching and redirection play, brushing and looping? That is the domain of us smoothies gang.

Or did I miss something? Has the pips cross over to the domain of us smoothies?

Help clear Gozo's confusion pls.

any old butterfly enthusiasts that could help me with ID'ing the age of this blade? i really love the current day jp korbel so when my gf showed me this whilst at a table tennis shop in Hong Kong i had to ask her to pick it up. got it for roughly 80 £
extensive korbeldating has determined this blade to be absolutely petr-fied.

Black tag and no serial number so it is at least 20 years old- black tag with serial started in 2006, silver tag in 2009 according to this MyTT thread: https://mytabletennis.net/forum/butterfly-blade-series-number-made-year_topic74045.html

Words are just words. That said, everyone plays with spin to some degree on shots, even the long pips guys, and definitely the medium pips, short pips and hard bat guys.

SP is able to play top spin - depending on the rubber.
you get attacking short pip players, that both hit flt and also topspins the ball.

The brush is normally lighter brushes compared to inverted, and such brush will actual make the ball dip a lot after the bounce, and causing the opponent to net the ball in the reply. So the opponent actually needs to angle differently and lift the ball slightly.

you probably haven't seen enough of SP loopers, but it is quite common.
I think there is a misconception that SP has no spin generating effects, while they do.

Today, if s SP player only learns flat hit, he/she can't get far.
This is also when musclepong visited me (only that 1 session) and he was using short/medium pips, I told him to brush the ball, of which it was the first time he ever did so. He also said, he didnt' know that rubber allows for it.

The girl (only girl that didn't go away to a tournament) that I arranged for him to knock with, was also a short/medium pip player and could brush the ball. So had a good demonstration for him. Both were pips on the backhand.

Had three consecutive tourneys where I performed well vs both higher players and those my level or reasonable winable higher players.

Made bad move of registering for a tourney just one week after the last and working day before driving 2-3 hrs to and from then 3 hrs to tourney getting up leaving before 5AM.

Bad move, was groggy, venue not good for me (glare and airport 100 decibel loud with basketball camp and games going on same gym loud whistles and fans) Prolly played 500 points lower than my level. Coud not see or hear ball, bad physical shape - super tired and groggy... gunna be a lot of ratings bleeding from this one and maybe I need a bad tourney like this to do the right thing to be properly prepared and string together another 3 good tourneys.

At least I had a realistic good attitude and did not make loud complaining like I would be inclined.

I've started going to the club a bit more often the past 2 weeks, with the goal of applying some of my recent trainings. I feel like I've made some pretty good improvements in my game play. Today I went to a coaching session, first time using the Q968 for a full club session as H3 takes like a few days to break in after initial boosting. I spent a lot less time on basic FH/BH practice as I've made a lot of progress there. Instead 2/3 of the practice was focused on footwork. First was BH footwork. I tend to move only 1 leg at a time, stretching left or right for shots to the side, and I'm trying to use a small jump move instead. After that was random FH/BHs, which required adjustments with my feet with each shot while still incorporating the learnings from basic BH/FH practices. Lastly it was random BH/FH loops vs. backspin, which is even harder on the legs as I'd have to bend lower.

This was by far the most exhausting practice session I've had. Multiple times over the last 2 exercises I had to take breaks because my legs were just too tired. My HR hit 180+ a couple times which is very rare while playing TT. After coaching I took a break, then played a few matches. I came the closest I ever did in beating a much higher level player, losing 11-8 in the 5th. I also played a guy who's been just a bit better than me. I'd come close before but never won, but this time I won 3-1. I then played a guy who'd been similar level as me and beat him 3-1 as well.

Overall, not bad for the first full session with the new setup. The Q968's FH is strong enough that even when not used to it it had enough positives to play well. The BH is spinnier, my coach noted that weaker, but I managed to do OK there. More than offsetting the BH weakness is the excellent touch on the service/receive game. A few days ago I beat another guy I'd never beaten before. He serves primarily long to my BH, as he has a strong BH and likes to play BH rallies. I used the FZD then and I was able to make a lot of quality BH attacks. I wonder how the Q968/H3 combo would do against that type of game?

1. Serve long backspin to the BH corner.
2. Prepare for a long BH push.
3. Retreat, pivot and FH loop-kill down the line.

The most beautiful and iconic shot in TT. Unker Gozo shed some tears watching this moment.

Someday, just someday: Unker Gozo will perform this feat and get it on video / YT. This Oja lives for moments like this!

Such classical and iconic stroke reminiscing the ol'skool era of Kim Taek Soo, Ryu Seungmin, Ma Lin et al. A time where real men played TT and not little boys.

Such stroke may be getting rarer & rarer and replaced by girly game of quick BH to BH exchange ( I am looking at you Felix )

It wasn't a long service, it was an ambiguously half long one which caused the hesitation as Manav couldn't decide between a BH loop or push, resulting in a and relatively weak and push. With a long backspin you might get a pivot FH loop-kill down the line by your opponent instead or a much quicker, faster, and spinner push which is much harder to loop kill.

been trying for years to make close-table game work to no avail, i just play way better in mid to far distance (i am a penholder)

i do understand why my coach is pushing me towards adopting a close-table game but i am often jammed, out-rallied by people faster than me, and the rapid usage of my feet and legs has led to injuries that took weeks for me to heal

when i think back to the moments where i DO play well there is one thing consistent with all of these moments, and that is that i am always a few feet away from the table

time to rethink my strategy :)

time to join the regular folks; use shakehand and loop from mid distance.

Interesting, I would've thought that playing farther back would be a bit more taxing on your body? Either way, just play the way you'd like to play, and perhaps find a coach who'd coach you that way. I know my coach doesn't work for everyone. He points out everything that's wrong with your stroke, and a lot of people feel confused due to the information overload, and since everything works together so unless you're able to do everything he tells you to do at least to some extent your game will probably get worse.
