I started playing table tennis around 1992-1993. Deng Yaping was sooooo dominant. Too bad she retired early.

When people talk about the greatest players of all time, they debate about ZJK v.s. Ma Long v.s. Waldner v.s. Liu Guoliang. Maybe Zhang Yining could enter the discussion (I would argue Zhang Yining was more dominant in her time than even Wang Nan was).

But people keep on forgetting about Deng Yaping. She is arguably one of the best players of all time (men or women). Her mental game was absolutely perfect. She basically dictated every single point. It was unbelievable.

Zhang Yining was just there few days ago, and now the true master herself - Deng Yaping
Zhang Yining had to wait for Wang Nan to decline/retire (kind of like Ma Long had blockage)
Deng Yaping had to beat everyone, including CNT policy makers against short players (she was deemed too short to be in the CNT).

from my sources, it is not that Chinese don't have quality pip players to train against, it is the focus just wasn't ever there.

IE, they would be opponent photos up on the walls, and study each one.
The only pips there are choppers or offensive style players. Never chop blockers.

the same coach who told me this said, the Indian players are not great - the ones that beat one or two chinese here and there, doesn't have any international accolades, which shows they are inconsistent and win only here and there, and tomorrow will loose here and there too.
If the chinese team focus more on these styles, the win-loss ratio will gradually change.
Thinking about it, the Queen of this style is Chinese and India has taken over in the style, but the style didn't conquer the sport like the Queen did, 30 years ago.
