A recent Tieba comment sums up the current atmosphere on 5ch (behind the "objective" facade) and the dilemma JTTA is in.

(Zennihon Takkyu 2024 full draws out)

The only one that JNT can bring to the table now is Hirano (low-key), whereas Hayata (be all things to all people) is merely propped up superficially, yet is in fact not a threat. As for Ito, it doesn't matter anymore, but Kihara is to be observed some more.

at best she can fight for a spot in LA 2026, but that means she'll have to compete against Miwa, Nagasaki and Kihara, who'll reach their peak performance beside the 00-line
The field for LA 2028 will be far more contested. It's still early to tell how competitive it will be, but there are at least 5 more up-and-coming players besides Harimoto.

Continuing from where I left off (11/12/2022 at 3:52am):
Hirano (2000/4/14)
Hayata (2000/7/7)
Ito (2000/10/21)

Nagasaki (2002/6/15)
Yokoi (2004/4/23)
Odo (2004/5/16)
Kihara (2004/8/3)

AOKI Sachi (2007/4/10)
MENDE Rin (2007/12/31)
TAKEYA Misuzu (2008/4/17)
TAKAMORI Mao (2008/5/15)
Harimoto (2008/6/16)
OJIO Yuna (2008/7/5)

Where Yokoi, Odo, Takamori and Aoki are affiliated to Shitennoji and Miki House. Given Yokoi's and Odo's zero international activities in 2022 and 2023, whereas Takamori had been playing weekly for the most part since May, 2023 and Aoki started playing again in Nov, 2023, I get the impression that both Yokoi and Odo will be passed over in the next cycle, much like Nagasaki and Kihara.

TV Tokyo has been following Harimoto in Doha. Harimoto says even if he couldn't win the Zennihon, as long as he gets a medal at Paris 2024, that'd be fine. Nothing is more important than the Olympics.

https://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/tabletennis/news/2024/01/032496.html

https://www.yomiuri.co.jp/olympic/2024/20240119-OYT1T50280/

"There has never been a Zennihon where so much is at stake," says Hirano Miu (Kinoshita Group), and the country's best tournament is attracting more attention than usual. (Kentaro Sugino)

...

At the Tokyo Olympics, which was her first appearance, she only competed in the team event, and will move on to the individual event at the Paris Olympics. "I want to finish competing in Japan with a strong feeling that I will definitely go in the end." If she advances smoothly, she will face Hayata Hina (Nippon Life), who is guaranteed a spot on the national team, in the semifinal.

...

Many formidable enemies await Ito's path. The first match is likely to be against 15-year-old Ojio Yuna (Seisa Junior High School), who won 4 individual and team titles at last year's World Youth Championships U15 (15 and under), and then Yokoi Sakura (Miki House), to whom she lost in the previous edition. There is a possibility that she will compete with the powerful Harimoto Miwa (Kinoshita Academy) and Kihara Miyu (Kinoshita Group).

"I will not give up until the end. I will fight like a challenger," said Ito, fueling her fighting spirit. She won 3 medals - gold, silver and bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, and with her unparalleled competitive strength, will she be able to make a comeback and go to Paris?

TAKEYA Misuzu/

Zennihon Takkyu 2024
JGS R16
Ojio 2-3 Takeya

JGS QF
Takamori lost 7 points in a row from 7:4 to 7:11 against 上澤杏音/UESAWA Anne in G5 after coming back strong from 1-2. Calling TO at 7:5 instead of 7:6 might've been better in retrospect. Had gamepoint in G3 after trailing for most of the game.
Takeya 1-3 兼吉優花/KANEYOSHI Yuka, the latter a chopper

JGS SF
Harimoto 3-1 Uesawa
Mende 3-1 Kaneyoshi
Uesawa forced a TO from Harimoto's dad at 7:6 of G4 after 7:4. Mende knows how to take apart a chopper.

JGS F
Harimoto 3-0 Mende
Harimoto's mind wandered off in G3 but managed to close it out.

JBS F
Matsushima 2-1 -> 2-2 -> 3-2 YOSHIYAMA Kazuki (brother of YOSHIYAMA Ryoichi)
Finally for Matsushima after how many tries?
Yoshiyama's coach didn't call TO at 7:8 after leading 7:4 in G3, but chose to "call it for Matsushima" after 8:8 (which then became 8:10 and 9:11)?
G5 21, 22 edge for Yoshiyama, 23, 73, 74 TO for Matsushima, 76, 86, 87, 97, 98, 118
The future is gloomy for this generation. Tofu mentality.

Without Kihara, Miwa winning the juniors is a mere formality. Congrats to Sora Matsushima for finally winning the All Japan Junior. Incidentally, his little sister Misora Matsushima had a good run making it to the 3rd round of the juniors where her opponent was no other than Miwa Harimoto. Not bad for the 10 year old.

maybe we should open a thread for All-Japan 2024 lol
Zennihon Takkyu 2024 is tied in with Paris 2024, which will be the last leg for this 3-year-long thread.

Is she the one that cried after losing to Adam Bobrow? That kid is definitely a competitor! Fun to see the Matsushima family rise up the ranks.

To be fair to Moe Nomura, she's can't be taken lightly either as she has shown the ability to win matches against quality players. In T.League this season she beat Fan Siqi and Sato. Last season in T.League, she beat a series of lower Chinese players such as Wei Wensheng, Li Jiayi, and Jiang Hui. She also beat Doo Hoi Kem, Cheng I-Ching, Kihara, and Mori.

Interesting that you pointed out the curse of winning 4 U15 Titles in the WYC in 2023 for Yuna, who failed to make it past the qualification rounds in All Japan 2024. Miwa Harimoto also won 4 U15 Titles in the WYC in 2021 before losing to Miku Izumo (also dangerous) in the qualification rounds in All Japan 2022. Fun fact, just like Yuna Ojio who would have faced Ito in the R64 of All Japan 2024 had she won, had Miwa made it past qualifications in 2022, she also would have faced Ito in the R64.
