This feature came after getting some perspective from coaches who would get tired from feeding multiball continuously.
Their complaint with random feeding was that it was too random. When feeding multiball themselves, they could see where the student was struggling and target those areas, but with random feeding they couldn’t make those choices ball by ball.
So we added this feature called Live Mode to our PongFox table-tennis robot. It works like a remote control: you feed multiball by tapping on the screen where you want the ball to go. Each tap triggers a ball, so tapping faster increases the feeding pace. You can also select different strokes to change ball speed in the middle of a drill without stopping.
Here’s the Live Mode video:
For people who practise solo at home, we also added an option to record, save and replay a rally. Before practising, you tap out the locations in the sequence you want and choose the strokes and speed. The robot then plays that sequence back while you practise, so you don’t need to keep tapping during the drill.
If you want more balls to a side you’re struggling with, you can build that into your sequence, test it and save it to use again.
Here’s the solo practice video:
We’ve explained how Live Mode works, including the difference between feeding pace and ball speed, here:

Would like to hear your feedback. Would this be useful in your coaching sessions or solo practice, and is there anything we could improve?
