In the Women's side CM, WMY would make the cut. DN will anyway get the nod. The last spot would be a difficult choice between ZYU , LSW . Even SYS might have a chance.

CNT has five spots. The fact that ZYL bested WMY and SMY while LSW lost to SMY (who uses short pimples like Ito) seem to suggest that the former has a confirmed spot. But objectively since WTTC is an international event, LSW not doing well during internal trials may not be such a huge factor after all. In the entirety of 2018 to present, LSW has only lost three times to non-Chinese players – Ito and Hayata. That itself is still pretty stellar so I think the point of the trials really is to surface any glaring problems the core players have. Unless breakout stars like Sun Yingsha and Wang Yidi are able to place second in the overall rankings, the five players to enter WTTC Singles will still be DN, LSW, ZYL, CM and WMY.

LSW is adding more techniques to her arsenal (e.g. increasing the toss of her serves, chiquita etc.) and trying to vary the style of her play beyond just speedy exchanges but she's clearly not used to it, hence the fluctuations in her results. Of course losing consecutively has also affected her mentality which I think was very obvious during her fight with DN yesterday. She still did decent (and would probably have won against lesser opponents) but there was no soul in her game, a little like Hirano's mindless rapid fires. If LSW can master whatever she is trying at the moment and use them instinctively, she will likely be very fatal again but if she can't, then she will never be able to push past this bottleneck. DN has additionally shown noticeable changes to her skills set too so kudos to the two old guards. Not sure if they will ever regain the dominance they had previously (both within and outside China) but admirable to see that they are trying. Just my two-cents.

Did not know CNT has 5 singles spots. In that case selection of LSW becomes a certainty. I, for one, never thought LSW lacked anything apart from a bit of power. If I was her coach, I would have just tried to improve that part of her game rather than trying to mess with her rythmn at this stage of her career.

I thinks these loses will give her a good lesson and she'll find what's wrong with her results . Liu shiwen can be champion this year , why not !

Xu Xin doesn't even try anymore i guess. He is not moving at all against WCQ.

He revealed in an interview that he is injured, which is why his win against Lin Gaoyuan was a surprise for many.

Powere doesn't magically appear out of nowhere especially with this plastic ball. She is smaller than the others in just about every physical way so unless she has an engine somewhere in her heart, she is not going to be more powerful than the others without playing flatter, which is not the Chinese way at this point.

She seems to have a better muscle tone than WMY. But stroke wise WMY packs much more power. IMO, stroke power has more to do than physical strength. May be tweaks to her stroke mechanics etc can get that extra 10~15 % power.

Next to Mima Ito I’d say LSW is rather tall. :) No lack of power there, though. But that’s a very different style, of course, with different demands in this respect.

Haven't seen either one in person, but I'd bet LSW plays with more power than Mima Ito. It's just that LSW uses a lot of her power for spin whereas Ito uses most of her power for speed. As you wrote, different styles. LSW could probably hit as fast or faster than Ito without sacrificing all her spin, but it would cost her some and with less spin she'd lose some control and consistency. It's an optimization problem that she and her coach probably think about every day.

I don’t think it’s as much a matter of power optimisation as it is tempo and spin variation. That was how Wang Nan kept up with the younger players towards the end of her career and what she was recommending for Liu Shiwen to try during her match against Sun Yingsha. The problem with adding spin and speed variation is that Liu Shiwen is so more used to playing at a monotonous tempo by virtue of her style so she will have greater issues adapting such a strategy compared to Wang Nan who played with more spin to begin with.

Xue Fei will come in 3rd (if FZD will win his last match), quite an impressive comeback after starting 0-3 on day one.
