Need to shorten blade handle

Hi I have a quick question.

I need to shorten the blade handle for my daughter. Her coach has told her the handle is effecting her backhand. She currently plays with a Primorac blade and really likes the blade. What is the maximum I can shorten the handle without losing balance and control? Whats the best tools to shorten the handle?

Try looking up the handle size of smaller blades/ childrens blades and see how short they go. I dont think this will be much shorter.

Everything you cut off will affect the balance, but I cant predict if this will be a problem. My experience with short handles is that they feel and play somewhat strange. I used to have a very high grip and i decided to test the limits and made a blade with very short handle, but I didnt like it at all.

Depending on how much wood you want to take away I would suggest a belt sander or a saw.

Is the issue that the handle is hitting part of her wrist and/or the ventral part of her lower distal forearm? (Inner forearm).

If so, I’d have her grip the bat with her normal bat, and cut it so the end would be sticking out maybe 3 or 4cm past the pad of her palm. Best way to do it is to use a cabinetry handsaw of some kind (fine toothed). You could probably get away with any saw; you’ll just have to sand down the end abit.

As for the balance, if you don’t adjust or counter weight the bat, the balance will be off. To deal with the imbalance, go to a tennis/golfing store and buy some lead tape. Weight he wood you cut off. Then cut off the same weight (maybe a tad more) in lead tape.Then apply to the end of the handle. You could then also cover the handle in grip tape too, just remember the grip tape adds weight so factor that in to your weight calculations.

A smaller blade allround is not a bad thing. She can outgrow her blade or keep using it. People use tiny blades. Balance matters a lot though.

You should also know, unless that is a pretty old Primorac, there is a hollow spot in the handle. If you cut enough to expose the hollow part, you will probably want to fill it. If that happens it will look like there is a hole in the bottom of the handle.

You could use the proper weight in led tape to fill the handle. And then something to fill and seal the hollow so the end is closed.

I would use one of these... followed by a wood file and sandpaper. I would fill in empty space with wood glue and stick in some tooth picks. There will likely be an open area on the very bottom if the blade is hollow. (as most modern blades are) You will need to cover this after your fill-in job. Finish with grip tape.

Another option is to get a Chinese Penhold round version of the same blade. Even some adult players do that.

The pic is a joke of course, one effective tool would be a hacksaw, which is very inexpensive. Wrap the bat handle (the amount of it that will be clamped in the vise) in something soft, even if it is a piece of cardboard. Clamp in a vice and leave sticking out the amount you need to cut off. Go ahead and cut off the piece. Use wood file and sandpaper to finish shaping and smoothing out the job.

I would fill in the inevitable empty space as described in my earlier post.
