Not really sure about which long pimple is better for a person who is new to it.
But definitely have a sponge underneath around 0.50-1.00mm would be good. This is based on me and my friend’s experience. Playing with ox(aka no sponge) long pimples gives you more of spin reversal however your control is significantly reduced for beginners. Having a sponge underneath makes it easier to get the ball over the table and control the placement of the shot

I fully agree with the suggestion to get some really inexpensive pips and try them out yourself. That is one effective way.

Since you can score new Chinese LP rubbers easily for under 10 GBP, why not get an OX and a sponged version to try out different styles of play?
