Love at first sight before even putting them on? Miyu Nagasaki's new shoes help her rise to 14th in the world rankings
At the WTT Star Contender Ljubljana table tennis tournament held in Slovenia in June, Miyu Nagasaki (Kinoshita Aviel Kanagawa/Mizuno) won the women's singles title, marking her first Star Contender victory. Her impressive feat, defeating three consecutive Chinese players, propelled her to a career-high 14th place in the world rankings (currently 15th). There's actually a story behind her victory. Nagasaki's feet were powered by Mizuno's new Wave Medal 8 shoes at the tournament. Mizuno's Shigeyuki Tamayama recalled when he first showed her the design, "She said, 'It's so cute, I want to try it on right away.'" He added, "Not only was she impressed by the design, but when she actually tried them on, she said, 'It's amazing, I want to wear it right away.'" The shoes were originally scheduled for delivery in July, but after receiving Nagasaki's request to wear them immediately at the WTT in June, adjustments were made and they were delivered in time for the Ljubljana tournament. Tamayama explained, "The deadline was quite tight, but we were able to deliver them to the staff who were joining us on-site." Nagasaki, who won her first official match wearing the Wave Medal 8, commented, "The comfort, grip, and fit are better than ever. I feel even more secure underfoot." Nagasaki has found a new "partner" amid a busy schedule of international tournaments. Her quest to break into the top 10 is likely to attract even more attention.
