The '90s Way of Thinking

This is a spin-off thread from this one, since I haven't really seen the topic get much love on English-speaking forums.

To get you up to speed,

The gist is that compared to China, the technical ideologies of many European coaches are dated, quite a number of them are even stuck in the '90s. The ETTU now sends along the coaches from every association. While the kids train, the coaches learn as well. After the day session, a night session for coaches is held, to let them in on the latest and greatest developement in table tennis. The aim is to get them to change their comprehension of table tennis, and to implement the new stuff in daily training.

Please indulge me, just what is this supposed "90s way of thinking"?

Basically, the philosophy in training, gameplay, style...etc. Think of table tennis from a macro perspective.
