The Honest blade (a happy OSP birthday to me)

So, im turning "gubbe" next year and thaught to myself, its time to get that midlife crisis sorted out.. and, a new blade sure is cheaper than a harley.. :D

So, emailing away with Laszlo over at Osp blades we have sorted out what can be done and what can't.
They have no way to make a copy of my banda-blades, but they make such fine blades, so ill choose one of them and order a custom handle on it.

The handle im choosing is a tribute to what I think is one of the most beautiful blades made, the Stiga Ehrlich. Sort of a mix of a cpen and a regular length handle, cut with an angle between them. Drilled holes like the original. My hope is that the balance will be better than on a cpen blade, and still not as long as my banda-handles. :)

Handle wood: Really dark wood.
Handle shape: Cpen / elcon-ish but with the Ehrlich cut at the end.

A mix of these pictures:

As a tribute, im having them put "Honest" on the handle.

The weight id like to keep pretty high. 90-95g.. Ill try to get them to use dense wood in the handle. Maby ebony or wenge will help.

My other thaughts are these:

Headsize: small - the bandas I play have smaller headsize than most blades. Love it. I do not like the headshape's of the modern cpen blades.. I find them too long.

Handle orientation:
This is a tough one.
FH - i think. Hoping to further help with the penhold grip on both forhand and rbp.
Sadly, that may make it more difficult playing traditional penhold backhand = not good. :(

But: What blade do i choose?

Id say im an off-oriented player. Like for most players, spin and speed is important to me. My bandas do have some flex, but are stiff and real heavy for five ply all wood blades. Im sure thats why they kick both the Dhs PG7 and Stiga Hybrid Wood out of the water.

So:

Im down to these 3:

Virtuoso +
Ultimate
Martin

Thaughts?

I would cross off the Ultimate. I think they are not so ultimate. If you want something that plays like a Off/Off- blade get the V+. If you want something that plays like an Off blade, get the Martin.

When you try the Clipper I sent you, and when I try the Banda you sent me, I should be able to help you figure out which blade you want.

I have three OSP but had played with one so far, the Ultimate. I thought it was/is pretty good blade. Haven't played with either Martin or V/V+, so can't compared them.

The other two I have are Musko and Expert.

Carl, have you tried Musko and Expert? Where do you put them in comparison to other OSP you tried?

Archosaurus: the blade is a tribute to the old Stiga Hans Ehrlich blade.
There have been some models but all of them have this cut.

I have one myself, from 1974.

I just love the way it looks.
Is sort of a perfect size for me playing penhold, and still getting better balance away from the head, as with many cpen blades.

Keep posting your thaughts and experience with the osp-blades. Love to hear them!

I knew what the inspiration comes from, but I'm asking WHY the handle is cut that way. Style, or an actual benefit?
The line folows the shape of the hand when playing shakehand, so I can see the logic of it.
It reduces the handle to its essential shape, I guess. So reduced weight.

The truth emerges and it's nothing of what I whant to hear.
Ofcorse that is the reason. Genious!

But, im still going for it.
Im hoping for a well balanced blade for my type of playing. :)

Tibor Klampar always used and uses a Stiga Ehrlich. :)
So, even back then the players didn't play with the blade named after them as well... Quite interesting...

Kind of difficult finding history after each blade made back then. So good to find tid bits every now and then.

P. S. I'm interested to try blade with that shape...

Klampar is a stubborn guy. He liked the Ehrlich, why should he change it, right? I think ZJK also uses his old Viscaria and didn't changed to a new one (someone could confirm or traverse this?).

I have not tried the Musko or the Expert.

I heard Musko has hard outer ply but i don't know how it plays. Don't know about the Expert either.

Truthfully, what I heard with Ultimate is that it feels really good but that it is more like it is between Off and Off- and that it does not have quite enough power from far back.

My friend who has one went back to his Clipper as a result. But who knows, it could be that he was attached to the Clipper or that he felt that and I might not. But to me, it sounded like my V+ was faster and has more power from deep while still having the flex and 5.65mm thickness of a 5 ply. For me, if I was going for 7 plies I would want the one I think has more power with the Limba top ply.

But everyone likes different things. So.....

When I get to try the Banda Waldner that Liten sent, I should have a better idea of what he will really want to use.
