Timo Boll's Chinese love affair

Timo Boll the European super star had his debut for Zhejiang in the Chinese Super League 2011 last Sunday. Boll’s table tennis skills haven’t only made him a dominant force against the Chinese, he is also a powerful tool for sponsors. Boll’s popularity in China and Europe is a massive benefit for advertisement. I would call Timo Boll the David Beckham of the table tennis world!

Timo Boll’s entry in the Chinese Super League will improve his skills as he will be out in China to learn Chinese and to improve as a player against the Chinese stars.

Boll’s debut saw him claim his first win in the major league defeating Fang Bo of Shangdong. Timo Boll’s team is of high quality including Ma Lin and Hao Shuai who are both National China team players.

The coach of Zhejiang, Chen Jian explained he was even happier when the European television stations contacted the Super League to broadcast the match in their region. “In the country, we need to pay for these stations. But in abroad, the stations will be the one to spend money to broadcast.”

Coach Chen Jian went on to explain, when he saw Timo Boll play against Zhang Jike in the World Championships in Rotterdam. Chen was shocked by the standing ovation Boll received when he walked into the arena in front of 9000 table tennis enthusiasts. All the tickets were sold out!

Timo Boll in recent times has been one of very few players to take on the Chinese team. Boll went on to say, “just after defeating a Chinese player you will be accepting another challenge from another Chinese player. Thus, you need to have a lot of extra strength to go through the end”.

One thing Timo Boll does like is that he likes the feeling that he is his own player. “Whether it is Ma Lin, Zhang Jike or Wang Liqin, everybody just refers them as ‘China.’ But there is a different case for me. I am the only Timo Boll and no one can replace that title.”

A reporter asked Boll to show him some Chinese skills. Boll said “I know how to write my own name and I also know how to say simple words.” “Ni hao,” “Xiexie,” Boll also managed to make a sentence: “Wo dian yi ping shui (I ordered a bottle of water).”

The reporter went on to say to Boll, “why have you only started to learn Chinese?”
Boll explained “After all, I will be spending more time in China. This time, I will also be dealing with more Chinese players so I want to learn the language.” Boll said that it is really important to study Chinese to have a better and more effective training.”

Boll answered the reporter and explained that he wants to participant in the Chinese Super League not only to learn the language, but to come up against the Chinese power houses more often. Thus, this gives Boll more experience and he can find ways on how to beat them. “The Chinese Super League 2011 may find me the answer”

The question I ask TableTennisDaily members or visitors... is Timo Boll going to improve out in China? Or will the Chinese National team get more use to his style of play?

The disadvantage could be that the Chinese can study Boll more and the players can get use to his game? Possibly...

The main thing is, that Timo will get some of chinese training.. Ma Lin once said, that european players will never be able to win over chinese, because their training is not good enough.. And now - Timo is in team with Ma Lin, he gets training just like Ma Lin, he will train with him, so .. Here is the thing: If Timo has some potential, he will definitely reach the top of it in China..So it is very positive for him..No matter for chinese players - they have already analyzed his game style so many times.. and they already train like chinese.. so what difference for them? None.. Just they will beat him more..Or maybe not.. :p
