What most Western media don't tell you - the unfiltered and undemonized proper history of modern China by a New Zealander.

Is Taiwan an independent country? Spoiler: No!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9blVhCFrCNw

Hong Kong is actually just as free if not freer than when it was under British rule, otherwise, all the social movements (a handful of them would qualify as secession) wouldn't have been left alone for 1/4 century after the handover in 1997. British Hong Kong also had something called the Special Branch with its fair share of political censorship. The British government only allowed some form of elections towards the end of their rule and Chinese government has observed it as promised and have only carried out some reforms recently after all those events that aimed at destabilizing the region and the state. Stability and prosperity have always been the top priorities of the Chinese people since ancient times. Given the Brits in their current state (whereas China doesn't even register the UK's presence on the world stage), Hong Kongers are actually better off now.

As for Taiwan not wanting to be part of China, what do you know? In recent years, many notable individuals, namely Youtubers and influencers, who used to be anti-Beijing have had a change of hearts after years and years of disappointment under the rule of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Did you ask people in TPE if they want to be part of China or you decide for them?
As the late Li Ao from Taiwan who "faced off" some of the youngsters in 1999 that went on to become separatists put it, did you ask the people in CHN if Taiwan is a part of China?

Backspacer is not wrong.
It clearly shows “you have been banned…”

Continue mocking him, it just shows who you are.
The thread title is inflammatory and only a fair representation of what happened when view led from your angle. I've told you what has actually happene based on the prior workings of this forum.

I'm not mocking anyone, what I've written is exactly what's happened. Even if NL made a mistake Tony has completely overreacted in deciding to never come back.
In what world is disconnecting completely because you didn't get your way not childish?
In what world do forum users not owe the moderators a degree of leniency and a duty of respect?
You are not here to ask questions, you are just slamming an agenda so stop with the holier than thou attitude.

And I've never been banned.
So tell yourself whatever you want to justify why you ignore the sense in what I write but you're here, stirring and making things worse. That's all you seem to be doing and being very childish about the entire thing.

IT's very simple - if someone refuses to discuss with me in private and makes it clear that my authority is simply undeserving of respect, I ban them for a relatively short period. One day vs two days is about two things - one is that I am not entirely sure how the calendar works on the board. And in my opinion, arguing extensively with moderators on forums is not something that should be encouraged. It seems that this is not the opinion of others for some reason, and that is okay, over time, people will understand the implications of what they are encouraging because they think this is largely about my personality and not about principle. Again, I did exactly the same thing to zeio. So for me, I am not concerned with favoritism. The main policy, which people can decide whether it will win out or not, is whether one should at least talk to the moderator about whatever they are unhappy with or whether they should post publicly and repeatedly about it without even having discussed it with the moderator to give the moderator a chance to fix it privately and then make it public. And when someone decides that they want to post something repeatedly accusing the moderator of bad faith action, what the response should be.
Why does he have to talk to you in private? Can't you give your reason publicly?

Don't know anything about the whole thing, but getting real Cartman vibes from this post :D

Everyone, since T
So.......
What are the rules?
What are the principals?
When mods are part of an argument - should maybe another mod step in and ask both of them to pm each other?
If I argue with a mod in the Enron thread, would I get banned too?

How does the banning work? 1 day, or 2 days for first offense? What is 2nd offense, 1 week, 1 month?

Tony shared this with me, at first, he was banned for 1 day, then it got upgraded to 2 days - which according to a mod on another forum is really long?
Did the other mods agree on banning Tony for 2 days or do they agree banning for 2 days is the norm as a first time offender?

Irrespective on who Tony is, or what he did was right or wrong, did a new mod comes onboard, starts making all these rule changes and implementing it before it was announced to us forum members?

I found the forum rules hidden and see nothing about these new rules and principal nextlevel speaks of, here are the rules:

  1. All posts must be written in English.
  2. Don't spam/abuse any other member via e-mail or Private Messages.
Do not spam or self-promote in the forums
These forums define spam as unsolicited advertisement for goods, services, and/or other websites or posts with little, no, or completely unrelated content.
Do not spam the forums with links to your site or product, or try to self-promote your website, business, or forums, etc. Doing so is a waste of time.
Your account will be banned permanently, and your posts will be deleted.
Spamming also includes sending private messages to a large number of different users.
Do not post "Free" threads
Posting pyramid scams (such as free iPods, LCDs, etc.) is forbidden. All such posts/signatures will be edited or deleted. Any new users posting scams will be banned permanently; contributing users will either be warned or temporarily banned.
Do not cross post questions
Please refrain from posting the same question in several forums. There is normally one forum which is most suitable for your question. If you're not sure where to post, ask a moderator first.

  • Do not post "offensive" posts, links, or images.
  • Do not post anything which is offensive, hateful, racist, sexist, discriminatory, obscene, vulgar, or in violation of local or international laws.
  • Remain respectful of other users, moderators, and administrators at all times.
Posting
All posts should be professional and courteous. You have every right to disagree with your fellow community members and explain your perspective. However, you are not free to attack, degrade, insult, or otherwise belittle them or the quality of this community. It does not matter what title or power you hold in these forums; you are expected to obey this rule. Doing otherwise will get your account banned temporarily or permanently if the situation becomes severe enough (this will be left to the discretion of the moderation team).
For example, phrases such as "shut up, idiot," are indicative of problematic posts and should be reported. Suggested alternatives include "I disagree with what you said for the following reasons..."
Please remember to stay mature and thoughtful at all times.
To answer a lot of this would require discussing at length the dynamics of moderation etc. While I will skip details for team reasons, I will address why I did what I did even when it was not explicitly written in the rules.

In reality, what I decided was that most people who understood the choice I faced (dealing with someone who was defiant in the face of being asked to discuss privately) would understand why I did what I did and would not think twice about it. The devil might be in the details, but in principle, what I did was standard moderator operating procedure. People tend to have guards up and egos high in public conflicts. You take them aside, talk to them and allow yourself (and in some cases themselves as well) to save face.

As much as again I have my opinions on various forum ongoings, I bear no personal malice against anyone. But what I do know is that if everyone takes the high political ground in the absence of an official position from management, there is no endgame. And if the idea is that moderators should leave all this stuff, I am okay with that as long as people are aware and willing to accept the risk. Righteous anger makes people do and say things without caring about the consequences.

Don't know anything about the whole thing, but getting real Cartman vibes from this post :D

It's a de-escalation technique because public visibility makes performance to the audience just as if not more important than the actual topic being discussed, and as a moderator, you are not trying litigate an issue, you are balancing a ton of considerations that are harder to balance when discussing in real time with observers. In private, the issues at the core of the disagreement can be focused on and then anything left over can be discussed or taken public if such motives are still in play after the private discussion.

Very often, you try to show up someone to the audience who you think made a mistake when you are not on good terms because of disagreement - this is very normal - and when there is no audience, some of this goes away and people can focus more on substance or get redirected to it. If the goal is to build a platform for agreement going forward, not best to discuss when other people are watching and potentially contributing. In fact, the main thing that makes this different is just Tony's status as a Top Member. What happened is standard operating procedure with moderators and forums.

EDIT: Sorry, that video was too funny.

That's seemingly become the entire point of this 'post'....
Rather than, two adults had a disagreement. One felt they should cook down and come back to it. The other wanted to do wherever he wanted so decided to leave forever 🙄

He is doing what all rational people do - using his leverage. I definitely used mine.

That said, please, as a moderator, I ask that you, @NetProphet, please refrain from accusing others of "childish" behavior. I understand where you are coming from, but I feel there are better ways of expressing such without putting me as a moderator in a difficult situation. Thank you.

Oh boy - What a Friday night read that was.

I'll try and be brief, because like many of you.... My time is disappearing rapidly these days!

Hey, I'm NDH and I agreed to help Dan with a bit of moderation on the forum when I have time.

I think it's important to remember that the forum has been held up by @UpSideDownCarl for the best part of a decade (virtually single handedly), and in recent years, a lot of issues have gone unchecked because Carl has been busy in the real world.

@Dan might "just do TTD" as one person put it, but my god is it difficult managing a busy international schedule, editing videos and having a family life - It's not a walk in the park, and the TTD team is very small (from a full time perspective). I know Dan would like to spend more time on the forum, but at the moment it's a hectic time.

I've wanted to put a "Welcome to your new mods" type post on, and I will do soon - We are just ironing out some broader rules (fairly generic type stuff, but a little more extensive than the current ones that no one has read), before I put the post on (as it will have a link to the rules).

There'll be nothing crazy in there, and it'll really boil down to.... Be nice. That's it - We are not asking for a lot, and people will be able to post and debate *a lot* of things - But be nice. You can have a difference of opinion without being rude.

Remember, tone is *very* hard to interpret online, especially when many people are not native English speakers.

To *briefly* weigh in on this thread - We all hope Tony comes back, and I think Dan/Devs are looking at alternative options than a 2 day ban (which seems to be the minimum at the moment).

However, it should never get to that - We are all adults, and we really do need to put past differences aside moving forward.

Moderating any online forum is an absolutely thankless task, and it often feels like a lose lose situation for the moderator.

If I could ask one thing from everyone, it is that you give us all a bit of a chance to get to grips with how Dan and the TTD team would like the forum to go, and help us out where possible.

I personally have no issues with any members here, and whilst I may not be a regular poster, you can always DM me with any questions and I'll do my best to answer.

I'll hopefully have the new thread up next week, and I welcome and feedback - Both now, and moving forward.

Any changes that come off the back of there being more active moderators should be good changes, ones that benefit the *majority* of the forum.

We have a great opportunity to really turn the forum (and community) into something even better than it has been, and petty squabbles that date back many years need to be left in the past! :)

Much love....

<ahem>

Why with seven posts are you so interested in all of this?

Should I emulate the behavior of the poster you're defending (with your oh-so-persuasive arguments, such as "End of") by accusing a fellow poster of "simping"?

No, no I shouldn't. So I won't. But I will say that - much like the moralizing and equivocation of the person you're defending so vehemently - you're playing in "pot calling kettle" waters of hypocrisy.
No, I'm not.
I asked why a new account with only 8 posts was so interested in it all.
I'm not vehemently defending anyone, I have no personal desire for one to be wrong or right.
I'm in defense of the forum and asking for some respect for the moderators. It's a tough job and whoever is doing it deserves to be cut some slack.
This is a pile on because one member has behaved (what I deem to be) a bit immaturely.
And let's not kid anyone, no matter what the facts are, your hat is firmly set in one camp so your bias being firmly established makes your thoughts on it completely meaningless to me.
